David Carruthers of BetonSports will face no more than 33 months in prison, and might be required to pay back $16 million.
In the summer of 2006, then CEO of BetonSports David Carruthers was arrested when passing through the Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport in Texas. The arrest came ahead of the passing of the UIGEA and was a sign for the coming.
Well, the coming has arrived. Catherine Hanaway, a US attorney, said that Mr. Carruthers agreed to plead guilty to conspiracy charges in exchange for a reduced sentence.
Carruthers, 51, will thus avoid a possible 20 year term in prison. Instead he will be expected to return some of the $16 million BetonSports customers lost when the online gaming company closed, and will face no more than 33 months in prison. His personal fine will be a mere $250,000.
Carruthers will also assist in the prosecution of BetonSports' other top officials. Five other BetonSports defendants, including founder Gary Kaplan, face trial in September.
