The match may have been last week, but this bit of news continues to be a hot topic across the gambling world. After an incredible comeback by United to beat City in the Manchester Derby last Saturday, two men from Tanzania received viral celebrity as their hand-written wager took to the internet. In short, the Nairobi News Report published an article saying that the men decided it would be a good idea to wager their wives, with the loser having to surrender his wife to the other for an entire week.
We are not sure how the wives felt about this wager, but after Amani Stanley lost the bet to Tony Shilla, Stanley's wife was in for a wild week. The 'contract' between the two men read was similar, but Stanley's included, "I hereby promise to give away my wife for an entire week to my brother Tony Shilla if Manchester City doesn’t win the league title against Manchester United. I’m of sound mind, and I've not been coerced into this agreement".
Meaningful Wagers
This and other non-cash bets have become a growing trend as die-hard fans move to more meaningful things to put up for a wager. Certainly betting one's life-partner is taking things to the extreme, but Stanley and the rest of the world after the first half were convinced that City would take the Derby.
The match will go down as one for the ages with a dramatic comeback by United to beat City 3-2. After the first 45-minutes, City was up by two goals, as Vincent Kompany and Ilkay Gundogan scored, but Jose Mourinho was not ready to let that stop his squad. United started its comeback Just eight minutes after the second half began with the first of two goals from Paul Pogba. His second goal came just two minutes later with one of the most beautiful headers of the year. Chris Smailing scored the third goal and United held on to a blistering attack from City to win. City will now need to wait to celebrate its league title.
