Connor McGregor and Manny Pacquiao are in negotiations for a potential fight in 2021, but will it be boxing or MMA?
Connor McGregor is set on another boxing match and this time it could be against one of the greatest of all time - Manny Pacquiao. The Filipino champion Pacquaio is in 3rd spot among the World's Greatest Welterweight Boxers just behind Sugar Ray Leonard (1st) and Floyd Mayweather (2nd) in the list. McGregor lost his boxing debut to the unbeaten Floyd Mayweather Jr., on August 26, 2017.
The UFC star from Ireland tweeted "I'm fighting Pacquaio next" on Friday night, but negotiations are still ongoing.
McGregor's coach John Kavanagh commented, "It's in the works. Both boxers have agreed fundamentally. Behind the scenes, there are a lot of terms and conditions, legal teams, and managers that have to work out fine details.
"I believe it will happen. When? I'm not sure. I think it might be early next year. The wheels are in motion. It looks like I'll be coaching boxing again."
McGregor has taken to social media mentioning that he was forced to hold back on his wide array of strikes, as his fight with Meyweather Jr. was strictly boxing. He has also stated that he hopes the fight with Pacquiao will be MMA this time.
McGregor stated, "I will see how the build-up goes and wait to hear what bitter old Freddie Roach (Pacquiao's long-term trainer) has to say and then make a decision. Boxing it is for now and I'm up for this! I hope no bottling takes place here. I'm already agreeing to these limited rules and holding back my full array of weapons. Let's get it going guys."
Days before his latest UFC victory over Donald "Cowboy" Cerrone, McGregor first insisted he was in talks to agree to a boxing match with Pacquaio. Soon after the win, Pacquiao finally acknowledged McGregor on social media, which left the door wide open to talks between the two.
At the post-fight press conference, McGregor exclaimed, "It's me and Manny," talking about his next fight.
