Montana Sports Betting Slated to Be Ready For March Madness

The Montana Lottery Commission has announced that it will begin a soft rollout of sports betting terminals on March 9. Currently, 127 licenses have already been granted, and more are expected to follow.

Much to the delight of college basketball fans in Montana, the state’s Lottery Commission has announced that its sports betting terminals will be operational in time for March Madness, which starts on March 17.

It will be a soft launch, beginning the week of March 9. Since the approval of sports betting in Montana in December, the Lottery Commission has received over 230 applications for sports betting licenses. As of now, 127 licenses have been issued. The Montana Lottery Commission will place terminals in the locations that have already received licenses, but because of the size of the state, it will take some time to set up all the terminals.

Montana’s Sports Betting Rules

Wagers will only be able to be placed inside the locations that have been licensed to have a terminal. Bets can be placed either at the terminals themselves or via a mobile app. The catch with the mobile app is that the bet needs to be placed while the bettor is inside the location. The Lottery Commission did not mention whether its mobile app will launch at the same time the physical terminals become operational.

Bets placed at the terminals will be limited to $250 in cash and bets placed via mobile app will have a $1000 limit. The payout on a single bet is capped at $100,000.

Bets will be able to be placed on college and pro sports, including baseball, basketball, boxing, football, and more.

More Licenses to Follow

Montana has the capacity to host as many as 1,4000 businesses with sports betting terminals since any liquor license holder can apply for a license. But first, the Lottery Commission needs to make sure that the initial terminals operate properly. Then, more licenses can be granted. Montana is a big state and has the potential to become a sports betting superpower.
