NBA Commissioner Calls to Bring Sports Betting into the Light

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver is backing legal sports betting citing "need for cash" in the USA as a major point to bring it to fruition.

It is no secret that NBA Commissioner Adam Silver is for legal online gambling. He, like many other business people in the world, understands that legal gambling leads to huge revenue for the state and as he runs one of the biggest sports businesses in the world, he wants those revenues to grow.

Silver backs the digital future of the NBA and the need to make the $400 billion industry regulated. Sports gambling has the potential to create thousands of new jobs, strengthen the economy and stop illegal gambling activity.  The commissioner is definitely in the right place at the right time, as US gambling laws are being discussed more openly and in a positive manner after Nevada, New Jersey and Delaware reap the rewards from online gambling profits.

When asked if the doors to legal online gambling should be open he replied, "absolutely, because I thing that what's going on with daily fantasy just demonstrates how much pent up interest there is in a legal format to participate and engage with our games". In an interview to Bloomberg, Silver said that sports betting should be brought into the light.

Fantasy or Big Business?

Fantasy sports have become huge business. There are leagues in every city of every state and many fantasy leagues open to players from around the world. The $400 billion in projected revenues from sports gambling is the number for the US alone, which is more than the entire budget of the US education system. Just think how many new projects the next President could fund thanks to gambling profits.

Not all are in favor of legalizing online gambling or fantasy business, with New York's attorney general strongly against the initiative. Florida is discussing the feasibility of regulated online gambling in their state with Governor Rick Scott creating a bill to approve a $3 billion gaming compact extension in discussions with the Seminoles.

The future of online gambling in the US could be a story with a happy ending. With help from leading figures in sports leagues like Silver at the helm, it could be sooner than originally speculated to begin.
