In what would be a landmark decision, the NCAA is openly discussing allowing betting on the professional sporting events it sponsors. But why is this happening now?
Over the years, there have been several high-profile cases of sports stars, team staff, and even coaches who have fallen foul of the NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) policies on sports betting.
As recently as February of this year, Sports Illustrated reported that the Federal Authorities and the NCAA were investigating collusion between Jontay Porter (a former NBA player) and an international gambling ring. It appears he was on the hook for losses on bets he had illegally placed on college basketball.
To protect the integrity of sports, the NCAA bans athletes, coaches, and staff from betting on collegiate events or professional events under its purview.
The reason is simple: players could be influenced through financial incentives or threats to affect game outcomes. Even coaching decisions like pulling a player early or subbing them late could disguise attempts to influence the outcomes of in-play bets and other wagers.
Matt Banker, college athletics consultant with MB Sports Consulting, said:
At a macro level, the biggest risk to college sports is point shaving and prop bets and the integrity of its competitions being called into question.
With the wide range of bets available, the issue isn’t limited to wins or losses. Concerns include point-shaving, intentional fouls, or deliberately underperforming - subtle actions that are hard to detect but can mean the difference between big losses or even bigger wins.
Since 2023, the NCAA has been investigating the viability of allowing athletes and coaching staff to bet on professional sporting events like the NFL. However, this has less to do with their trust in pro leagues and more to do with avoiding the burden of overseeing both collegiate and professional sports.
Matt Banker explains:
From a resource standpoint, if the NCAA national office’s only function was to monitor all three NCAA divisions’ hundreds of thousands of athletes, coaches, and staff for all iterations of sports wagering—including pro-sports wagering—that could be the full-time job for everyone in the building.
The NCAA is focused on protecting college sports but isn’t equipped to police the professional arena, either. With betting legal in nearly 80% of US states, enforcement teams are overwhelmed by minor infractions and nuisance cases.
Every nuisance case investigated in the pro arena means resources are being diverted from ensuring that college events are not being tainted or that college athletes are not being led astray.
While the organisation seems to be on the verge of divesting itself of the challenges of being a pro-level watchdog, it has made it crystal clear that it will not entertain any conversations about betting on college sports.
The ban on college-level betting ensures that players are protected from gambling harm, their sporting accomplishments are never tainted by scandal, and they do not face harassment from parties with vested interests in betting-related outcomes of teams and individual players.
