NL Wild Card Game: Can the Cubs beat the Pirates?Published October 7, 2015 by Sol FH
One win and in: National League Wild Card game tonight from PNC Park as the Pirates host the Cubs for the first time in MLB post-season history. Tonight at 1:00 GMT.
It has never happened since the beginning of Major League Baseball, but tonight the Cubs take on the Pirates for a chance at the 2015 MLB playoffs. In the postseason for the first time together, both teams will be throwing everything they have at the other in hopes of making it to the last NL playoff spot.
After last night's shocker, the Yankees lost to the Astros in the AL Wild Card after a hard fought battle left the home team scoreless at 3-0. Neither the Cubs, nor the Pirates want their season to end and they both have their best pitcher's heading to the mound tonight.
Pitching for the Win
The Cubs are going with their ace Jake Arrieta, while the Pirates are throwing Gerrit Cole. Both hurlers have what it takes to shut down the other teams' hitters, but since this is the first time in history that they have met in the postseason, it is new territory for both teams.
On offense, the biggest hitters on either team is Andrew McCutchen for the Pirates and Anthony Rizzo for the Cubs. Both hitters have proven that they can win games with their bats and both are worthy of MVP. McCutchen is up for MLB, MVP this year, after winning it in 2013 and finishing 3rd, twice in other seasons.
Rizzo finished the season with an amazing 31 home runs and 101 RBI's. Against Cole, Rizzo has gone 6-for-17 but has yet to hit the long ball against him. "See the ball and hit it," Rizzo related in a recent interview. "They have a good pitcher going, we have a good pitcher going. The focus will be on defense."
The Pirates seemingly have the upper hand, both playing at home and the fact that they have gone 8-1 in Cole's last nine starts against the Chicago. The Cubs were the best in the Major League's regarding wins-on-the-road, having won 48 away games and they won 3 out of 4 games at PNC in September.
