Females achieve gender equality in a rather surprising industry: online gambling
Women have made great gains in the past few decades in achieving equality in politics, business, sport, and other areas where they have traditionally suffered discrimination. Now females have also achieved equality in online gambling, recent studies in the UK show.
Females gamble more
Excluding the National Lottery, the proportion of women who gamble has risen to more than half for the first time in recorded history, according to Britain's National Centre for Social Research. This is quite an incredible statistic given that it was only a few years ago that there were obvious stigmas toward women who gambled.
Thanks in part to his huge new market, Britain's online gambling market took in revenues of £1.71 billion in 2011, according to a study by industry experts GamblingData. And what's more, this figure is expected to top £2 billion for the first time this year, thanks also the spread of mobile gambling.
What women want
Traditionally females have veered towards activities like online bingo, but this is no longer the case. If you want proof, just look at the successful PokerStars Women's Poker League, which offers female poker players the opportunity to enjoy themselves and compete against their fellow women in a safe, responsible environment.
Women are also breaking down barriers in the online casino and slots world, with gambling operators noticeably gearing a lot of their games and promotions towards females in particular. This should continue as more and more females embrace the world of online gambling.
