Liverpool look to get back on track with a home win against Newcastle tonight at 20:00 GMT.
Liverpool’s hopes of a Champions League berth faded after losing two straight matches in Premier League action against Manchester United and Arsenal. The Reds need to get out of their weak form of late and tonight is an excellent opportunity to do so against Newcastle. The Magpies are no pushovers though, they beat Liverpool in November 2014 after a stunning goal from Perez in the late stages of the second half. Newcastle needs to change a lot of things on the pitch if they are to have any chance against the Reds. In fact, the last five encounters against Liverpool, Newcastle has had five red cards.
Team Focus
Liverpool secured their FA Cup semi-final qualification after beating the Rovers at Ewood Park and will face Aston Villa on Sunday April 19. The Reds are currently in 6th place in the Premier League and can take over Southampton for fifth place. There is not much more they will be able to do this season, as the top four teams, Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester United and Manchester City are much higher in points for the season leaving fifth place the best that Liverpool will be able to achieve.
Over their last six matches, Liverpool have won four and lost two and Brendan Rodgers is sure they will walk away as winners tonight.
Newcastle are struggling this year and have only won one game in their last six. The Magpies are in 13th position going into tonight’s match and Head Coach John Carver hopes that his team can bounce back after losing a derby match-up last week against Sunderland 1-0. Newcastle is plagued by injuries this season and still have a number of players out. Not only injured, Newcastle have some of their top players out on suspensions including Papiss Cisse and Fabricio Coloccini, while Siem de Jong and Steven Taylor are absent due to illness and injury respectively.
If Newcastle can pull out the win tonight, it will be the first time they have doubled up against the Reds since 1993/94.
