Premier League Preview: Southampton Vs. LiverpoolPublished January 4, 2021 by Sol FH
The league leaders take on Southampton tonight at 20:00 GMT and it looks like the Reds will again dominate.
It will be a tough home match for Southampton to deal with tonight as they meet Liverpool at St. Mary's Stadium. The Saints have lost each of their last six matches against the Reds, and to make matters worse, goalkeeper Alex McCarthy will miss the match due to a positive Coronavirus test.
McCarthy, 31, has maintained seven clean sheets in 16 league games, is now in quarantine at home.
"After the last round of tests, we have one positive case now with McCarthy, so he's out for the game on Monday and maybe also the Shrewsbury game, as he has to self-isolate for a period," said Hasenhuttl.
Liverpool has only won two of its last five matches. They still reign over the league with a record of 9-6-1. Their sole loss came back on October 4 against Aston Villa.
Jürgen Klopp will have an unchanged squad available to choose from tonight and is not reporting any new injuries. The Reds will continue to be without center-back Joel Matip for the road-match. He has been ruled out for three weeks with an adductor issue.
Both teams have played 16 games so far this season and Liverpool is better in all stat categories. The Reds have scored 37 goals, while the Saints only 25. Liverpool also gets a lot more opportunities to score with 101 on target to Southampton's 71.
In any event, Liverpool is the heavy favorite to win tonight and maintain their position on the table.
