The online casino industry has always been a hub for innovation due to its love for cutting-edge technology and the evolving needs of players.
In recent years, this has led to the creation of incredible new gambling opportunities, such as live dealer casino games, crypto-inspired crash games, and unique approaches to games like Plinko and fishing-shooting titles.
Despite the furore surrounding these relative newcomers to the casino space, the biggest game-changer for early online slot fans was the inclusion of progressive jackpots.
The concept of progressive jackpot networks is fairly simple. Allow players to add a fraction of their bets to a prize pool for a chance to claim a share, if not all, of it. The idea was first put into play in 1986 by International Game Technology (IGT), who developed the world’s first land-based progressive slot, Megabucks.
Gambling’s love affair with progressive jackpot games was cemented in 1987 when the Megabucks slot machine paid its first jackpot prize of $4.9 million!
As human ingenuity looked to expand upon IGT’s brainchild, the industry expanded to include several types of progressive networks:
It is also worth noting that online progressive networks are not platformed-locked. This means that players can compete on desktop pc and mobile casinos to win these games' incredible prizes.

The major drawcard of progressive jackpot games for players who enjoy the various themes and bonus features is its ease of engagement. There is nothing you need to learn how to do, not extra costs that need to be paid or special requirements for winning big.
All you have to do is play your favourite online or mobile slot game and select a bet setting that suits your budget. If the odds fall in your favour, you are automatically in the running for a multi-million dollar payday.
Even if they don’t, you have still enjoyed the games you love and have most likely landed a few decent-sized base game wins.
Then there is the fact that the inclusion of a progressive jackpot like Mega Moolah or Wowpot to your favourite slot means the maximum payout potential jumps from, say, 5000x to 1,000,000x your bet - all without you having to change anything about your play style.
There are even jackpot games like Relax Gaming’s Dream Drop that entice players with smaller but more frequent jackpots as their games are guaranteed to payout before the prize pool hits $3 million, and the seed value after a Mega win is $2 million!
Hitting a casino jackpot is always up to chance, as no strategies or betting systems can guarantee when the slot is hot enough to hit! This random stroke of luck is what makes these wins even sweeter:
Progressive prize pools are also localised to most regions, which is why you see jackpots like Dream Drop seemingly payout over their advertised $3 million limit. The lucky player landed a max win payout in Euros, which, when converted to Dollars, pushes it over the limit.

Games Global is the biggest name in progressive jackpot slots entertainment. The casino games provider is the parent company behind three of the top five jackpot networks: WowPot, Mega Moolah, and King Millions.
The company took the reins of the Mega Moolah and WowPot networks from Microgaming and instantly set about entrenching itself as a market leader.
They revamped WowPot, which had until then always been a distant second fiddle to Mega Moolah, increasing the seed value and maximum payout thresholds. Despite Mega Moolah holding the Guinness World Record for the biggest online slot prize, WowPot should hold that crown, nearly doubling the value with a payout of €38.46 million ($40.2 million) in 2024.
Games Global then set about launching a new progressive network, King Millions. This product was lauded as their biggest yet, with an expected top prize of $33 million - WowPot hadn’t run the gauntlet yet - boasting Major and Grand jackpots with seed values of $1 million and $2 million, respectively.
One of the least expected jackpot windfalls comes from the King Millions network. Gold Blitz King Millions went into wide release on 5 February 2025, and only one day later, on 6 February, it paid out a fantastic €10.9 million ($11.4 million) - the biggest prize for the network since its inception.

Not satisfied with resting on its laurels, Games Global continues its drive to be crowned king of the progressive jackpot providers, announcing a brand-new product.
In an industry interview with EGR, Games Global Chief Product Officer Andy Booth surprised the industry by announcing the company’s latest project, the Lotsaloot progressive jackpot.
The Lotsaloot progressive will feature a “three-tier jackpot system designed to reward players with more frequent wins than ever.” Booth specifically mentions that players looking for record wins can take their chances on WowPot, Mega Moolah, and WowPot. Those looking for high-frequency jackpots will find the Lotsaloot network more appealing.
Games Global is throwing down the gauntlet to the likes of Relax Gaming, who believed they had cornered the high-frequency, lower-jackpot market.
With Lotsaloot launching on 25 February 2025, we will soon know if Games Global will sweep the jackpot slot market clean or if Relax Gaming and others can hold their own.
