Seven State Workers Share $319 Million Jackpot

Each tech worker to take home massive check after winning 5th- biggest prize ever.

One day they were just seven regular tech guys working at New York state's Division of Housing and Community Renewal, and the next they were millionaires after hitting the multistate Mega Millions fifth largest jackpot prize in its history.

"Unreal"

Fifty-four-year-old John Kutey, who along with six colleagues hit the $319 million jackpot, said at a news conference at state lottery headquarters in Schenectady, "It still seems unreal to us. We're pretty average folks, This really hasn't sunk in for anybody."

After dividing the prize into seven and accounting for taxes, each of the winners will collect a $19.1 million check, changing their lives.

However, five other colleagues who usually join the seven winners in buying the lottery ticket but on this particular day decided not to participate, will certainly be kicking themselves over their missed opportunity.

It Could Have been Different

It's amazing what circumstances can lead to winning the lottery, and in this case it was a craving for chocolate. Mike Barth, 63, was designated to buy the ticket from a local newsstand, but another customer cut in front of him in the line when he reached for a snickers.

Well that snickers turned out to be the best chocolate bar he ever ate when it meant he, and not the rude man in front of him, purchased the winning ticket.

Although the moral of the story may well be that it's preferable just to buy lottery tickets online: you have the same chance of winning, and don't have to deal with rude people disrespecting you!
