Spanish Super Cup: Barcelona Meets Athletic BilbaoPublished August 14, 2015 by Florin P
Barcelona takes on Athletic Bilbao in the first leg of the Spanish Super Cup (21:00 p.m UK Time)
Barcelona has a very busy schedule in early August and will play two critical matches before the domestic championship resumes. They’ve already got the chance to put their players to the test against some of the best teams in the world and now need to focus on winning the Spanish Super Cup.
Three Days Rest After UEFA Super Cup
The reigning Spanish and European champions decided to rest some key players during the friendly games played in North America. This will come in handy this week, when they only have three days to recuperate their strength after taking on Sevilla in Tbilisi.
Under normal circumstances, the Spanish Super Cup would pit the winner of the Primera Division against the team who won Copa del Rey. With Barcelona winning both trophies last season, it was inevitable for them to play against their vanquished foe once again. Athletic Bilbao don’t have an impressive track record against the Catalans and were clearly outplayed in the most recent encounter.
Double Legged Super Cup Favors Barcelona
Barcelona and Athletic Bilbao will face off three times in less than 10 days, as they will also meet in the opening round of Primera Division. Unlike the Copa del Rey final which consists of a single match, the Super Cup has two legs and the first one will be played in Bilbao. The home side is in dire need of victory, because the odds of leaving Nou Camp with points are slim to none.
This will add extra pressure on the shoulders of their players, as they can no longer afford to retreat in their own half. Barcelona is given low odds of 2/7 by bet365 and other bookies to prevail on the road, while a successful bet on a draw would rein in a great return on investment, since the odds sit at 17/4.
