After 12 consecutive years of growth, the NY state lottery reports record sales.
New York State reported record high sales after its 12th consecutive year of growth. Revenues increased by as much as 7 percent in the lottery's latest report, totaling $8.44 billion by the end of March 31st, 2012.
The Powerball game in particular noted remarkable growth along with contributions from Genting's Resorts World Casino at Aqueduct which had recently opened its doors in the burrow of Queens, New York.
State lotteries have long been an efficient way to generate funds for the state budget. Not only that but they have long served to instill excitement and stirred the public to contribute to an event that benefits the state overall.
The world was all abuzz when the Jackpot reached a record $656 million on March 30th, which led to a surge in ticket sales. Tickets landing the Mega Millions were eventually sold in Kansas, Maryland and Illinois. With odds around 1 in 176 million it's a long shot to pull in the kind of money the Mega Millions promise, but for many that fact is no deterrent.
Even if the heartbreak of knowing the NY state Mega Millions was won elsewhere in the country a group of 17 New York natives managed to wrangle their own $250,000 consolation prize.
