Swedish Lottery Provider Protects Players

Svenska Spel is the largest gaming operator in Sweden and is about to up the gambling ante in 2010 by raising the minimum age for lottery ticket purchases to 18. It has also announced that it will be channeling more funding into gambling support.

Social Responsiblity
The initiatives are all part of Svenska Spel's Corporate Social Responsibility Program and will mean that its 9,800 lottery vendors, selling either Svenska Spel or Triss lottery tickets, will now need to vet the age of punters if they have any doubts about their eligibility to play.

Gambling Support
Although Svenska Spel have pledged money on gambling support progams, they feel that ultimately the Government, not private gambling operators, should fund such treatment.

The company is due to invest SEK3 million to ensure the continuation of two gambling support programs; a 24 hour gambling helpline and an internet based self help program.

"It feels good to be able to save two well functioning projects under a transition period until the authorities have decided who should fund them," said Margareta Winberg, Chair of Svenska Spel.

Ms Winberg went on to comment that there is a need for clear differentiation between what is seen as a preventive measure and what is classified as treatment of gambling addiction.  She feels that the responsibility for each lies from different sources and that the responsibilities of a gambling company only go so far.
