The biggest names in professional tennis have made it to the final tournament of the, taking place at O2 Arena in London, England this week. This will be the 48th edition of singles action and will take place on indoor hard courts. This competition pits the top eight ranked players of the season into two groups of four. The first stage, which is what is being played right now is a round robin. The winners of each group advance to the semifinals. Winning the group stage gives an advantage, as they will be playing the runner-up from the opposing group.
The competition will be fierce as there is a prize purse worth $1,785,000 for the winner, plus 900 points in the rankings. There is big money however for all players, as the runner-up will get $585,000 and 400 points, whilst each round-robin matchup is worth $191,000 and 200 points a pop.
The story already is that the world No. 1, Rafael Nadal will remain No. 1 in the ATP rankings. This is the fourth time that Nadal will be ranked No. 1 for the new season, but Federer is just a few hundred points off the track. Nadal currently has 10,645 points, while Federer has 9,205. Federer won his World Tour Final opening match against Jack Sock. Sock needed a big win at the Rolex Paris Masters to make it here, but facing Federer in the opening match would be very hard to win.
Other big news in the tournament so far was Alexander Zverev beating Marin Cilic in their first match. It was an action-packed first match that could've gone either way. Zverev opened the match by winning the first set 6-4, but the second set was all Cilic at 6-3. Zverev dug deep and took control of the third and final set 6-4, but he used up a lot of energy to get the win.
