The Coalition to Stop Online Gambling and the AGA are going head-to-head as the issue of USA online gambling regulations heats up.
Sheldon Adelson, one of the main opponents of online gambling, and the driving force behind the Coalition to Stop Internet Gambling, has recently announced his new approach to target individual states that are considering online poker and gambling legislation.
Andy Abboud, chief lobbyist for Adelson, stated, "We are prepared to mount full campaigns in every state where a bill is introduced to legalize any form of online gaming. We will also be doing education in all states to prevent the introduction of any bills."
The Coalition's Work
The Coalition's focus on individual states will not detract from its focus on anti-federal regulations, which it has been promoting from its inception. Currently, they are seeking to overturn a 2011 DoJ decision that paved the way for states to enact online gambling legislation.
On December 10, Abboud made a case against federal legislation for online gambling at a House Subcommittee on Commerce, Manufacturing, and Trade hearing. His stance, and that of Adelson's were touted as hypocritical, as Adelson made his own fortune by operating casinos around the world!
The American Gaming Association
The American Gaming Association (AGA) has been working to counteract Adelson's negative efforts against online gaming legislation. The AGA claims that if no federal regulations are passed, a state-by-state patchwork will arise that endangers gaming patrons, problem gamblers and minors. Moreover, the federal government can drastically increase its revenue if they pass legislation to regulate online gambling in the USA.
The situation as it stands now: both sides are poised for war.
