Time Magazine Profiles Gambling Opponent

Time Magazine has made a controversial choice in naming a long-time opponent of online casinos in its list of Top 10 US Senators this week. Arizona's Jon Kyl is renowned for his anti-gambling stance and his numerous attempts to introduce legislation to ba

Yet Time Magazine has chosen to overlook Kyl's campaign against the industry, instead stating that his tireless efforts to promote Republican values and his steadfast loyalty to his party have earned him the honor of a spot in the Top 10.

Kyl's proposed legislation against the online casino has failed to pass both House and Senate floors in the past. His most recent attempt to attach legislation to an unrelated bill last year raised strong objections from a Democrat Senator in the House and effectively sidelined Kyl's efforts to gain further support for it. While few can question the Arizona Senator's determination, Democrat rival Jim Pederson claims to being unimpressed by Time Magazine's decision. A spokesman for Pederson has commented that unswerving party loyalty should not be taken as a compliment, and went on to say that the long time adversary is incapable of being an independent voice in Washington. Similar comments were forthcoming from several operators of gambling websites.

While Kyl's efforts have traditionally gained strong support within the Republican Party, anti-gambling campaigners haven't faired so well in recent weeks. Senator Bob Goodlatte's bill, which aims to prevent financial institutions from processing transactions to the online casino, has gained little support. Similarly, Jim Leech's recent debate with operator John Carruthers put the US government in bad light when the Senator refused to visit Carruther's facilities in order to learn more about the prevention of compulsive gambling problems.
