Tonight: The US Powerball Jackpot Surges to $185 MillionPublished September 16, 2015 by Florin P
US Powerball Jackpot inches closer to $200 million mark.
The last couple of days were particularly exciting for American lottery players who purchase Powerball tickets on a weekly basis. The jackpot crossed several psychological thresholds and it is about to set another milestone, while currently sitting at $184 million. This Wednesday could be the lucky day for millions of players and thanks to The Lotter and Play USA Lotteries, tickets can now be bought online as well.
The Powerball Snowball Effect
Major American lotteries and their European counterparts follow a similar pattern, when it comes to potentially life-changing jackpots. The number of people purchasing tickets increases dramatically whenever the jackpots cross certain limits. Last week, the jackpot surged to $120 million, a $20 million increase and an additional $35 million were thrown into the mix in just a couple of days.
This Wednesday, at 11 PM EST time the draw is held in Tallahassee, so players residing in United Kingdom can watch it live at 4 AM local time. The possibility of purchasing tickets online has led to a significant increase in the number of participants and Internet vendors are contributing to the Powerball’s resurgence.
How to Win the Jackpot?
The odds of hitting the winning combination that will unlock the jackpot are stacked against the players, who have to match the Powerball number and five regular ones. With the first prize being rolled over whenever participants fail to match all the required numbers, the jackpot keeps growing and there is no upper limit.
A secondary prize worth $1 million is awarded to those who only match 5 numbers out of 59, while failing to predict the Powerball number from a pool of 35. The price of tickets ranges from $2-$3 depending on whether players choose to activate the optional power play feature. A total of 44 US states participate and whenever someone wins the jackpot, the base amount is reset at $40 million.
