US Open: Nadal Reignites Old Rivalry with Fognini

Rafael Nadal seeks consecutive victories after dropping two in a row to Fognini (4:00 p.m UK Time).

Rafael Nadal is better known for his performance on clay but with injuries keeping him away from the court for many months, he struggled to find his rhythm. Nadal now has the chance of winning another major trophy, this time on US soil but in order to make it this far he needs to overcome a familiar opponent. Fabio Fognini took advantage of his health issues this year and won twice in 2015, before losing by a narrow margin in Hamburg.

Straight Set Victories for Nadal and Fognini

The two players advanced with relative ease in the second round after winning their matches in three sets, but Rafael had a harder time against Schwartzman. The Argentinean had the chance to push the match into a fourth set and had a break advance, but couldn’t handle the pressure. The fact that he pushed his opponent to two tie breaks says a great deal about Nadal’s difficulties in returning powerful serves.

This is what Fognini is all about and when the Italian comes out firing on all cylinders, he has the potential of throwing better opponents off-balance. The underdog status also plays to his advantage as he isn’t under pressure despite the fact that he plays in a Grand Slam tournament.

Narrow Margin Victories in Recent Games

Bookmakers overwhelmingly favor Nadal and Bet365 Sports offers odds that are tempting for those who are not that quick to dismiss the Italian. Fognini is not going to go down without a fight and even though he starts with the second chance, he should be capable of covering the +5.5 games spread.

A three-set victory is not impossible but most unlikely and in order for this bet to be a winner, Fognini only needs to prevail in one set. Tennis fans are in for a treat, as these two players have a reputation of producing breathtaking matched when they square off.
