US Open: Nadal vs Lajovic in Round of 128 Action
Published August 29, 2017 by Sol FH
No. 1 ranked US Open contender Rafael Nadal takes on 85th rank Dusan Lajovic at Arthur Ashe Stadium tonight at 19:15 GMT.
This year, quite literally has been a year of comebacks. We have seen the likes of Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer dominate the ATP on clay and grass respectively, but last night on the women's side was arguably the biggest comeback yet. Before we look at tonight's match between Nadal and Lajovic let's take a look at what Maria Sharapova did to No. 2 ranked player in the world, Simona Halep.
Sharapova was back in his first grand slam tournament since her doping ban from 2016. Sharapova had beaten Halep six times in the past, but after such a long break it was hard to imagine that she would be in the same form. She came out last night and dominated the first and third sets, sending Halep home in the Round of 128, and leaving the door open for an amazing and unpredictable US Open.
Nadal vs Lajovic
Nadal is the favorite to win the US Open and will play his opening match tonight against Serbian, Dusan Lajovic. Nadal is on fire this year, but has not been able to beat his rival, Roger Federer. They will not meet in the final this year, as they are both in the top half, and would meet in the semis if all goes well.
Nadal has played Lajovic once in the past at Roland Garros in 2014, crushing him 6-1, 6-2, 6-1. That was on clay, where Nadal is the best in the history of the world, and much can change at the US Open. It should be an excellent match, but expect the Spaniard to dominate much the same way that he did in 2014.
