When the Host Isn’t Human: AI Presenters Step Into the Live Casino Gambling

For years, the live casino experience has always relied on a human touch. A croupier spins the wheel, deals cards, or guides players through a game show - as close as you can get to a real casino in an otherwise digital environment. But what happens when that presenter isn’t human at all?

That question moved from theory to reality when BetGames ran a quiet experiment replacing its human presenters with AI-generated avatars during a live game show broadcast. 

Inside the Experiment

The experiment itself was designed to be subtle. Rather than introducing obviously synthetic hosts, BetGames created AI avatars that closely resembled real presenters already familiar to players.

The results? More than 70% of players did not realise the presenters were artificial. Even more strikingly, gameplay behaviour, such as session length, betting patterns, and bets placed per player, remained unchanged.  

For an industry constantly exploring artificial intelligence, automation, and cost optimisation, the experiment delivered an unexpected takeaway: AI presenters worked, but they didn’t actually improve anything. From a user perspective, almost nothing changed.

1. The AI Presenter:

Digital replicas appeared during a series of live sessions over several days. From a player’s perspective, the game ran as usual, the host spoke to the camera, and rounds progressed normally. 

The hosts weren’t simply animated characters; they were digital replicas of real presenters designed to look and sound familiar to players.

Behind the scenes, the software provider closely monitored key performance metrics: session duration, average stake size, the total number of bets placed, and other behavioural indicators that typically reveal when players respond positively or negatively to product changes.

2. The Data:

The data showed no anomalies in behaviour. Players did not spend more time in the game, nor did they wager more aggressively. Just as importantly, they didn’t disengage or leave the table sooner. 

In other words, replacing the human host with an AI avatar had almost no measurable impact.

3. The Takeaway:

Technologically, the data might signal a successful experiment: the avatars performed convincingly enough that most online casino players never noticed the change. The question from a business perspective: if nothing changes and there’s no significant financial upside, why deploy the technology at all?

At least for now, BetGames concluded that AI presenters offer no meaningful operational advantage or disadvantage over traditional hosts.

Technical Challenges Still in the Way

While the avatars successfully mimicked human hosts, there are several technical hurdles to overcome before AI presenters in live casino studios become a common occurrence:

1. Text-To-Speech: One of the biggest challenges of using AI is generating speech that sounds convincing. Although technology has dramatically improved, a live studio gaming setup exposes even minor imperfections: small delays or unnatural movements get noticed instantly.
2. Lip Syncing: Another big obstacle is lip synchronisation. If mouth movements drift even slightly from spoken words, the illusion begins to crack. Maintaining perfect alignment during a live broadcast is technically demanding.
3. Latency: In an environment that depends on precise timing, latency plays a critical role. Even the slightest delay between speech generation, animation rendering, and broadcasting could disrupt the game's pacing.
4. Translation Accuracy: Most live casino studios offer games in multiple languages, and engagement must be accurate and in real-time. Although AI systems can handle translation, subtle context errors or pronunciation variations can still occur.

Individually, these issues might seem minor. Together, they create friction in an environment that relies on smooth, real-time entertainment.

Discussion & Opinion

The most interesting questions raised by the experiment aren’t technical - it’s philosophical:

• If the Host is AI, is it Still “Live Gaming”? Live casino gaming is built on authenticity, and the appeal lies mostly in the human touch. The host provides personality, humour, and the sense that a real person is guiding the experience. Removing that element risks turning live games into something closer to automated streams.
• Is AI Pushing Live Gaming into Entirely New Territory? What if AI could eventually allow you to customise your “human” presenter? Imagine logging into a live game show and having the option of selecting the dealer you want. One player might prefer a formal, suit-clad host speaking British English, while another might choose a more casual presenter speaking Spanish or French.
• Could AI Enable a Fully Personalised Live Experience? With AI technology, a player could, in principle, create an entirely personalised live gaming experience. Appearance could be specified: gender, ethnicity, clothing styles, accents, personalities, and even the tempo of the presentation. In that scenario, AI becomes less about limitation and more about flexibility.
• Is AI Making the Impossible Possible? Without a doubt, AI enables experiences that would be impossible with traditional studio staffing. This is the idea hinted at by BetGames’ leadership.

As CEO Andreas Koeberl noted during the research project, the technology itself isn’t the point. Recreating something that already exists doesn’t automatically improve it. The real opportunity lies in exploring what AI might enable that wasn’t possible before.

Live Casino Gaming: A “New” Future 

BetGames’ AI presenter experiment revealed something both simple and surprising. The technology can convincingly replicate a live host - so convincingly, in fact, that most players didn’t notice the difference.

Yet despite that technical achievement, the trial also showed that replacing human presenters currently offers little practical benefit. Player behaviour remained unchanged, and the cost advantages often associated with automation were not significant. 

For now, live casino studios will continue to rely on real hosts to anchor their broadcasts. But the experiment still matters, demonstrating that AI has reached a level where it can quietly step into the studio without disrupting the player experience.
