Wimbledon Women's Semifinal: Venus Williams vs Johanna Konta
Published July 13, 2017 by Sol FH
5-time Wimbledon Champions, Venus Williams takes on British hopeful, Johanna Konta today at 14:15 GMT.
It has been 40 years since a British woman has been in the final of Wimbledon. In fact, it is the first time since 1978 that Britain has had a woman in the semifinals. After a lot of hard work and tough play, Johanna Konta has become one of the four women battling for a spot in the most prestigious stage in tennis, but she needs to beat one of the all-time best in Venus Williams.
Konta could be on her way to her very first Grand Slam Final, but as we have all seen throughout the action thus far, Williams is back and making a comeback to the prime time of her career. Konta is actually favored to win the match against Williams today, but don't count Venus out just yet.
Great Britain only has one chance of winning, as Andy Murray, World No. 1 (most-likely not for too much longer) lost to American Sam Querrey yesterday in a thrilling match.
The difference in experience will definitely come into play today, and Williams definitely wins that statistic race, but Konta is playing some excellent tennis after having knocked out Halep in the quarterfinals to make it here. She has been greeted with incredible support from her fans. "In terms of the home support I feel very excited and very humbled by it," she said. "When you get a massive crowd of people cheering, making that sort of noise in a stadium, you do get goosebumps," she continued.
For Williams, if she were to pull off the amazing comeback, it would be her first major title since 2008. Currently ranked 10th, she still has a long road in order to get there, but she looks fit and ready to hoist some hardware.
