International Women's Day was a good reminder of importance of gender equality.
International Women's Day was marked on Friday March 8, and while that data has now passed, it is a good opportunity to celebrate the online gambling industry's leadership in advancing gender equality.
Women play as much as men
Almost half of all British online casino players were female in 2011, the last time a comprehensive survey was carried out. At the time, 48.48 percent of people who played casino games or other online gambling platforms were women, and the data is estimated to be similar globally.
Around the same time, a British Gambling Preference Survey showed that while women are playing online casino games more than ever, they still prefer niche areas such as bingo and slots. The main thing to take out of all this though, is that women are able to play freely, without the old stigmas associated with doing so.
Attracting female players
These days major online gambling operators know that they must pull out all stops to attract female players to try their products. There is plenty of competition, and those that ignore 50% of the population simply do so at their own peril - both business-wise and reputation-wise.
A quick glance at any online casino or poker site shows how far things have come. Whether it's female poker leagues like the one run by PokerStars, slots that cater to specific female tastes, or promotions that are also likelier to be favoured by women, the gaming industry should proud of the female contribution and of what it offers to women.
