World Cup Preview: Switzerland's Chances Tonight

The Group E opener is on tonight at 6:00pm (UK time) with all eyes on Switzerland as they take on Ecuador.

The European qualifying was one of the best examples of Swiss soccer as they went through without a loss and received one of the coveted top 8 seeds for the Brazil World Cup.  Under the watchful eye of Ottmar Hitzfeld, Switzerland will need to be on their game tonight in the all important opener against Ecuador.

Unbeaten in Europe, Top Spot in Group E

They were one of 5 countries in Europe that qualified without a loss including German, England, the Netherlands and Spain.  They were placed in 6th spot in the FIFA rankings and shocked all their critics for the first time in many years.  Hitzfeld is a two-time World Coach of the Year recipient and has built the current Swiss national men's team from the ground up based on defense.  Switzerland have only conceded 6 goals in 9 qualifiers and lest we forget the only team to beat the 2010 World Cup Champions Spain was in fact the Swiss.

If France, ranked second in Group E, plays the game that they are used to they should finish first as they are jam packed with stars but a win for either Switzerland or Ecuador tonight could decide who moves on as the group runner-up.
