Austria

The guide to Austrian casino licensing.

Gambling is an integral part of the Austrian economy and it contributes to the wealth of the country.  However, in order to ensure the fairness and safety of online gambling in Austria it is licensed and regulated by the European Commission.  Austrian gambling can come in a number of different forms including online and land-based casinos.

One of the most unique aspects of this particular regulation system is that the laws are created to identify what is thought to be proper gambling and what is considered to be as little gambling.  Proper gambling means that there is a large amount of financial transactions that take place which is only allowed in casinos.  Little gambling can happen nearly anywhere in Austria and usually involves significantly smaller financial transactions.  Sports betting is considered to be little gambling.  The bets for little gambling can begin at just 50 cents and can also include locations that have card games, slots games and other low stakes casino games.

Austria has restrictions for online gambling that all residents must abide by.  The government issues gambling licenses to Austrian companies and online casinos in the country can also accept Austrian players.  However, Austrian citizens can play at online casinos that are not within Austria.  In terms of advertising campaigns, only companies that have received licensing can conduct these campaigns.  Foreign-licensed companies cannot advertise their company.

Some of the most influential online gambling operators are located in Austria.  The reason for this is that if the headquarters for that company were in another country then they would not be able to advertise or operate in Austria.
