The Dutch Gaming Authority (Kansspelautoriteit) Licensed Online Casinos and information on Netherlands Regulatory Body

Overview

The Netherlands is one of the latest European countries to launch an online gambling market. More specifically, the newly legalized Dutch iGaming market was launched on the 1st of October 2021. This also marks when the Dutch Gaming Authority (Kansspelautoriteit) was tasked with issuing remote gaming licenses and overseeing all forms of online gambling activities.

The main Netherlands Regulatory Body for remote gambling is based in the Hague. This is an independently-operating gambling regulator responsible for monitoring games of chance and games of skill. The Dutch Gaming Authority (Kansspelautoriteit) is also responsible for combating criminal and illicit forms of gambling, protecting players’ rights, offering services and resources to help individuals struggling with gambling addiction, and making sure gambling-related marketing campaigns align with the main gambling legislation.

Since April 2012, when the Netherlands Regulatory Body was founded, it was also tasked with monitoring and issuing licenses to land-based casinos. The regulatory body gets its funding through licensing and other gambling-related fees and costs operators pay. At the time of writing this, the Dutch gambling regulator is supervised by the Board of Directors. 

The Dutch Gaming Authority (Kansspelautoriteit) wants to create a better and safer gambling scene for all Dutch residents by making sure all licensed operators follow local gambling laws and regulations. The gambling regulatory body is also heavily involved in promoting responsible gambling practices and making sure all games of chance offer fair winning odds.

Since its beginnings in 2012, the Dutch Gaming Authority (Kansspelautoriteit) has collaborated with many international gambling organizations and authorities even though the Dutch gambling industry does not lie on an international level. 

Gambling operators licensed by the Dutch Gaming Authority (Kansspelautoriteit) pay taxes on their gross gaming revenues, and the tax rate on casino games or games of chance is set at 29.5%. Essentially, gambling operators invest 29.5% of their gross gaming revenues in taxes every year. Online gambling operators based in the Netherlands invest 1.95% of their gross gaming revenues in taxes. Gambling winnings are also taxed, and the tax rate is also 29.5% on all winnings collected above €449.
