General History
The Vermont Lottery began in 1977 and is a member of the Tri-State Lottery which is a multi-jurisdictional lottery that offers games to Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont. In July 2009, the Tri-State Lottery gave their Megabucks game a major facelift and re-named it as Megabucks Plus with double the starting jackpot, a second prize of $30,000 instead of $10,000 and dramatically improved odds of winning a prize.
Megabucks Plus jackpots now start at a guaranteed $1 million and the probability of winning it is 1 in 4,496,388.
Every Wednesday and Saturday evening five numbers from 1 to 41 are drawn plus one Megaball which is a number 1 through 6. You win when you match the numbers drawn with the numbers you marked on your Tri-State Megabucks Plus play slip. Megabucks Plus costs $2 per play.

How to Play
On a Tri-State Megabucks Plus play slip mark five numbers from 1 through 41 in a single panel and one Megaball which is 1 through 6. You can also ask for an Easy Pick to let the computer terminal randomly pick numbers for you. You may play up to five panels on a single play slip and the cost is $2 per play.

There are nine prize divisions which are as follows:
- five numbers plus the Megaball wins the jackpot
- five numbers wins $30,000
- four numbers plus the Megaball wins $1,300

- three numbers plus the Megaball wins $25

- two numbers plus the Megaball wins $5
- two numbers plus the Megaball wins $2
- one number plus the Megaball wins $2
If there are multiple winners of the Jackpot on any given draw, the prize money will be divided equally among all the winners.

Notable Wins
The biggest Megabucks Plus jackpot was won in Vermont on August 1, 2009 for $4.89 Million. When the game was Megabucks the largest jackpot was $16.4 million.
Distribution of Revenue
The Vermont Lottery has contributed over $430 million to the state's Education Fund. A further $91 million has gone back to the local communities and been paid to local Lottery agents in the form of commissions.
