There is a simple 20 question test whereby you can find out if you are addicted to gambling. The questions are simple and sound innocent, but the answers tell a story. So why doesn't every gambler take the test on a regular basis to find out how he or she is doing? The answer is that they don't take the test, neither do they think of going in search of help until the addiction hits a vital nerve or organ, meaning the bank account or the family structure. By then, of course, the crisis is upon them and help is ineffective. New study According to a study carried out at the Auckland University of Technology in New Zealand, the gamblers were ‘paralyzed by fear of public stigma and shame', and this prevented them from making any sensible moves. Pride and denial are also part of the equation. The two-year study is a deep and wide one and covers many aspects of gambling addiction. The study also includes different examples of the outcome of gambling addiction, from broken homes to selling of assets to raise funds for further gambling to chase after losses. The 300 odd people participants in the study were questioned as to the type and quality of the help that is available, their knowledge about how to look for help and the effectiveness of the help when they finally found it. Not a minute too late The main recommendation arising from the study is the encouragement of problem gamblers to seek help before their addiction hit a crisis. Other suggestions are increasing the awareness of problem gambling and raising awareness that help is available.
The $700 billion bailout was set in motion one month ago. Both parties were intent on repairing the hamstrung economy; both camps also blamed one another for adding to the economic woes. On hearing the news, the Dow fell 778 points; it has fallen even more since. Obama on McCain In his criticism - part of the Presidential campaign - Senator Obama was quoted as saying "I read the other day that Senator McCain likes to gamble. He likes to roll those dice." This was a clear reference to McCain's love of gambling - notably craps - and also an allusion to the senator's maverick stance on several issues. Obama went on to say that the American economy and Main Street - not Wall Street - cannot be led by a man who likes to gamble with their interests. Senator McCain's camp shot back and blamed the Obama camp for using partisan politics during a national emergency. Only a metaphor? A new bill is hastily being drafted - one that better satisfies the requirements of opponents in the House. Meanwhile Obama has suggested that the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation should increase the limit from $100 000 to a more realistic $250 000 limit - breaking a 28-year ruling that has not been amended. The move is likely to reassure investors, homeowners and Citizen Joes that their money is safe in US banks. Somehow, gambling fits in there, as a metaphor I suppose.
Former basketball star Charles Barkley has made the headlines for all the wrong reasons once again, this time saying cable network Fox News is "f---ed up" and "corrupt" and that he prefers CNN. "Sir Charles", a former Republican who recently announced his intention to run for governor in his home state of Alabama in 2014, told television trade publication Broadcasting & Cable: "I watch CNN, they're not f---ed up like Fox... They are a mouthpiece for the Republican Party. I watch gambling debts to Wynn Las Vegas, having accumulated a debt of as much as $400,000. He had borrowed the amount from Wynn in the form of four $100,000 casino markers on October 18 and 19, 2007. Although he paid back the amount in full, he did not manage to prevent the story from being made public, which is likely to serve as a barrier to his future political ambitions.

Americans might be restricted by gambling laws, but millions of dollars have been bet in the United Kingdom on the outcome of Tuesday's presidential election, financial news website MarketWatch has reported. UK bookmakers are expected to finish with a total of around 5 million pounds ($8 million) in bets connected to the US elections, said Ladbrokes spokesman Robin Hutchinson. The figure amounts to more than double the sum bet on the 2004 elections - a race that according to pre-election polls was shaping up as a much smaller contest than this year's. Other bookmakers have estimated this year's total could amount to as much as 10 million pounds, which although far from the biggest betting event in the UK, does make the US election just as popular for British punters as the average British general election. One possible explanation for this favored by bookmakers is that for various reasons the 2008 US election has been given more international attention than usual. "It's not just an election in the United States; it's the election for the leader of the free world... because it just affects so many countries around the globe," Hutchison said. "We take bets in 120 countries, and we've taken bets on the presidential election in all those countries." As the first votes were cast on Tuesday, Ladbrokes was quoting odds of 1.06 for Democrat candidate Barack Obama to win, against 8.50 for Republican John McCain.
Wayne Rooney celebrated a successful international match - at the casino! British newspaper The Mirror has reported that English football star Wayne Rooney lost £65,000 in a two-hour gambling spree after hitting a casino at 4 AM. The Manchester United striker went on his spree after arriving home from a successful World Cup qualifier in Belarus, in which he scored two goals in a 3-1 English victory. Rooney 23, hit a members-only club in Manchester to play blackjack and roulette at £500 tables. Gambling history This is not the first time Rooney has thrown away big bucks at the casino. In November 2007, he went on a £250,000 gambling spree while accompanying his Manchester United teammates to a Manchester casino to celebrate captain Rio Ferdinand's birthday. And two years ago the Sunday Mirror reported that Rooney racked up £700,000 in debts while running a secret England national team dressing room gambling ring.
