Murray and Federer Top Wimbledon Odds

Brit Andy Murray has emerged as Roger Federer's biggest challenger in the odds for the upcoming Wimbledon championships. Murray, 3.50 to win the tournament at UK bookmaker William Hill, is aiming to become the first Brit to win the world's most prestigious tennis tournament since Fred Perry way back in 1936. William Hill was also offering odds of 4.00 on him Murray completing the Queens-Wimbledon double prior to Murray's Queens final Sunday against American James Blake. Roger Federer, who won his first French Open last week to tie Pete Sampras' record of 14 Grand Slam wins, has emerged as the clear favorite to reclaim the trophy he won every year from 2003 to 2007, with odds of 2.10. Defending Wimbledon champion (and still world number one) Rafael Nadal is the only other major contender, finding himself in unfamiliar territory in third place behind Murray at odds of 4.00. The women's singles appears to be much more open, as usual. Serena Williams, 3.50, leads sister Venus, 3.50. They are followed by a host of eastern Europeans, led by Russian Maria Sharapova, 7.00, world number one Dinara Safina, also of Russia, 9.00, Belorussian Victoria Azarenka, 11.00, and Serb Ana Ivanovic, 13.00. Wimbledon begins June 22 at London's All England Club, ending with the men's singles final on July 5.

Poker Players Vow to Fight Payment Seizures

The Poker Players Alliance has vowed to lead the legal fight on behalf of online poker players after the US Attorney for the Southern District of New York seized over $30 million belonging to at least 24,000 online poker players last week. The PPA confirmed last week that the authorities had sent requests to Wells Fargo, Citibank and other smaller banks to freeze the accounts of Allied Systems and Account Services, two companies that process payouts for online poker rooms, news agencies reported last week. The banks complied with the requests, resulting in the seizure of over $30 million of payments issued by poker rooms to players. In a statement Thursday, PPA Executive Director John Pappas said the seizures had nothing to do with the 2006 Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act, but rather were based on a broad interpretation of the Wire Act, revised in 1961, which aims to control the transmission of sports bet and sports betting information. According to the PPA, the Department of Justice has "significantly overstepped" its legal boundaries, as the Wire Act "does not affect or control online gaming of any type, including poker." Pappas added that the seizures were in no way an indication that online poker is finished in the United States. "There have been many actions like this in the past," he said, giving examples including the NETeller seizures and the arrest of SportingBet executives. "Online poker has weathered those actions, which appeared in several cases to be significantly worse than this one."

Celebrity Poker Debuts on Playboy TV

Playboy TV has become the latest television channel to join the celebrity poker craze, with a new poker program called "Sam's game" debuting last Thursday. The show, filmed at the Palms Casino and Resort in Las Vegas, is hosted by renowned producer Sam Simon and will include comedian Norm McDonald, actress Jennifer Tilly (who is Simon's ex-wife) and 2001 Playmate of the Year Brande Roderick. Professional poker players will also join in the action, including Phil Laak and Jennifer Leigh. According to Simon, Playboy TV came up with the idea after hearing about the poker nights he regularly held for his celebrity buddies. "The stakes aren't the biggest, the players aren't the best but the game is definitely the funniest," Simon was quoted as saying by The Associated Press. "I've spent years in development to try to get shows on the air. When a network calls and says, 'We want to shoot this... the answer is yes," Simon said. Simon is most famous for his role as one of the original developers of The Simpsons, along with Matt Groening and James L. Brooks. He has also written for other television shows such as Cheers, The Tracey Ullman Show and The Drew Carey Show. Simon competed in the 2007 World Series of Poker, finishing in 329th position.

US Open Odds: Tiger Woods On Top

Following his dramatic win against Rocco Mediate at last year's US Open, Tiger Woods is once again set to repeat history to capture the renowned golfing title. Woods is a 7/4 favorite at William Hill Sports entering day 1. Last year, even with a damaged leg, the living golf legend was able to out-putt the famous Pennsylvanian, who has also suffered his own share of injury problems. Can Tiger go for the double? Bookies seem to think so. A win at this year's game would also give Woods his fourth Open victory, which would tie him in with four wins by Willie Anderson, Bobby Jones, Ben Hogan, and Jack Nicklaus. Potential Woods-Mickelson Showdown The New York hamlet town of Bethpage is the setting for the historical battle between the world's golfing giants. Next on the leader board after Tiger Woods is Phil Mickelson, a 20/1 favorite at Will Hill. Mickelson is another crowd pleaser who puts everything into his game. Sadly, personal tragedy may affect his game this year following his recent announcement that his wife has been diagnosed with breast cancer. However, Mickelson is a 100% pro, and a showdown between him and Woods would be electric. He also has a huge following in the New York area, and will undoubtedly be cheered on by his many supporters. Other Contenders As they say, it ain't over until the lady of unusually large proportions starts singing, and there's no guarantee that either Woods or Mickelson will end up holding the Open trophy. Aussie Geoff Ogilvy is tied with Mickelson with 20/1 odds at the UK sportsbook. Other names in the running for the win are Jim Furyk, Jim Casey and Irishman Padraig Harrington. Tee Offs to Watch The battle commences today at 8:06 am with Padraig Harrington and Tiger Woods teaming up with Angel Cabrera, which is certainly going to draw the crowds. Phil Mickelson starts his game in the afternoon, teaming up with South Africans Retief Goosen and Ernie Els. One winner is already known - it's you, the bettor. William Hill Sports offers a Bet One Get One Free promotion.

EU Criticizes US Online Gambling Ban

An EU investigation into the US ban on online gambling - whether it is protectionist and breaches World Trade Organization agreements - has been completed. The report finds that European businesses are discriminated against be the American government's ban. The Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act - or UIGEA - would escape criticism and be legal had it not allowed local websites to offer online gambling, namely horse racing bets. But as it stands, allowing some and banning the rest goes against international trade agreements, the report claims. A complaint filed with the EU by London-based Remote Gambling Association (RGA) in March 2008 is thus found to pass the test of the law: US obstacles are unfair and discriminatory. What next? The US has reached agreement with Antigua last year, though it has not paid the $21 million it owes in compensation. The WTO was the arbitrator in that case as well. Would the US opt to reach agreement with the EU? If so, it will surely come to more than $21 million, with the ban effects including: "revenue and stock market value lost... and also the threat of serious sanctions hanging over them that affect their normal operations outside of the US," in the words of report.

Leonardo DiCaprio a Gambling Movie Star

Hollywood mega-star Leonardo DiCaprio is slated to star in an untitled as of yet, film written by the same team who created the cult classic movie Rounders and Ocean's 13 - Brian Koppelman and David Levien. Both films had a gambling theme to them, and Leo's new film is no exception. This movie is written and will be directed from Costa Rica, exploring the online casino world and the players who frequent them. Similar to Rounders which starred Edward Norton and Matt Damon as high-stakes underground poker players, the script is one with many turns and thrills as film goer's see the good, bad and nitty gritty of the gambling business. With Leonardo DiCaprio on board as the lead actor, no other details have been forthcoming about the film, including other cast members. But one thing is for sure, this golden boy tends to pick winning films to brand his name upon, and if Rounders or Ocean's 13 are any indication of success - this new movie will be eagerly anticipated come opening weekend.

Federer Firm in Wimbledon Odds

The shock withdrawal of defending champion and world number one Rafael Nadal from Wimbledon means Roger Federer has firmed in the betting odds to win the tournament. Spaniard Nadal became only the second defending men's Wimbledon champion in 35 years to not return to the All England Club the following year after making the decision to pull out of the tourney because of knee tendinitis. Prior to pulling out, Nadal was third favorite with bookmakers, behind Federer and Brit Andy Murray. Federer, quoted at around 2.10 by most bookmakers one week ago, has shortened to odds-on favoritism, with Ladbrokes offering 1.72 for him to win the tournament just one day before proceedings begin. Murray has also firmed to 2.75, a long way ahead of the next contender - Novak Djokovic, 13.00. Anything other than a Federer-Murray final will be a major surprise - Ladbrokes is offering odds of 2.10 on the two meeting in the championship decider two weeks from now. The stakes are high for both players. Federer is looking to break the all-time record of grand slam singles victories, currently shared by himself and Pete Sampras with 14, and would also return to the number one ranking he made his own for more than four years until replaced by Nadal in August 2008. Local hero Murray is still trying to win his maiden grand slam, and if he does so at Wimbledon he would become the first Brit to win the world's most prestigious tennis tournament since Fred Perry way back in 1936.
