Responsible Gaming Education Week From August 2-6 the AGA is hosting Responsible Gaming Education Week, which will give it another opportunity to educate the public about the gaming industry and to counter the damage done by legislation such as the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act, which was implemented on July 1, 2010, and effectively banned online gambling in the US.
Powerball is set to offer one of the largest jackpots in American lottery history on Wednesday, and Las Vegas online bookmakers are offering customers the chance to bet on the lottery results. Given the chance of actually picking the five numbers between one and 59 and the additional Powerball number between one and 39, putting a few dollars down at the sportsbooks probably seems to make a lot more sense. The World Series of Poker Main Event has been cut down to the final table of nine players, and in a big surprise the globally popular tournament has been dominated by Americans. Six American players, two Canadians and an Italian made the final stage of WSOP, which will be delayed until the grand finale beginning in Las Vegas on November 6, with a $9.8 million top prize up for grabs. Some 7,000 players from 92 different nations participated in the $10,000 buy-in no-limit event, but such was the dominance of the Americans and their Canadian neighbours that only Italian Filippo Candio prevented an all-North American extravaganza in the final table. Twenty-two year-old Canadian Jonathan Duhamel heads into the final stage as the chip leader, with around 66 million of the 210 million chips in his possession. But he will have to compete with some bigger names, including seventh-placed American Michael Mizrachi, one of four brothers to have won money in the Main Event, a tournament record. Also in the running are: John Dolan, US, second; Joseph Cheong, US, third; John Racener, US, fourth; Matthew Jarvis, Canada, fifth; Soi Nguyen, US, eighth; and Jason Senti, US, ninth.

Will the United States overturn the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA)? Will online gambling be legal, and regulated, in the USA? Yesterday, July 28, they took a big step in that direction. The Vote The House Financial Services Committee, chaired by Barney Frank (D-MA), voted 41-22-1 to approve a bill that will license and regulate online gambling. It was not the first time the Committee voted on the bill, as previous attempts began in 2008 with mixed success. The Bill Chairman Frank's bill is titled: Internet Gambling Regulation, Consumer Protection, and Enforcement Act (HR 2267). It was amended last minute by John Campbell and Brad Sherman, the former a Republican and the latter a Democrat, both representing California, before passing. These amendments will also ensure online gambling facilities targeting US residents will be based in the country. Player Protection Other amendments include player protection measures such as posting the odds of winning of every game, verifying payer's age and location verifications, and loss limits. Comments First and most notable perhaps of all comments was voiced by the Poker Players Alliance, which supported the legislative efforts for a long time and seemed satisfied with the bill and the voting results. At the hearings, the Alliance was represented by professional poker player Annie Duke. Former Sen. Alfonse D'Amato, chairman of the PPA said: "I'm glad the Financial Services Committee today overwhelmingly chose to act and protect Americans as well as preserve the fundamental freedoms of adults and the Internet." What's Next? The uphill journey to repeal the ban is not over. Next, the bill will be voted on by the full House. This can happen after the summer break and before the November elections, likely no sooner than September 7. Then the Senate needs to vote on the bill, before President Obama signs it into law.

With eight of 19 races still left to go, including the Hungarian Grand Prix on Sunday, the 2010 Formula One season is down to a race between five drivers. Just 34 points splits first-placed Lewis Hamilton (UK, McLaren) and fifth-placed Fernando Alonso (Spain, Ferrari), and the bookies are finding it hard to split them too. Hamilton is currently paying 2/1 odds at William Hill to win the Drivers Championship for the second time, ahead of Sebastian Vettel (Germany, Red Bull, fourth in standings), 9/4. Alonso is next at 5/2, followed by Mark Webber (Australia, Red Bull, third in standings), 6/1, and Hamilton's British and McLaren team mate Jenson Button (second in standings), 8/1. The Formula One betting odds for the Hungarian Grand Prix, to be held just outside of Budapest, are ordered slightly differently. Vettel and Alonso are 2/1 joint favorites, followed by Webber, 9/2 and Hamilton, 6/1. But Brazilian Felipe Massa edges out Button for fifth in the betting, quoting 8/1 after his second-placed finish at the German Grand Prix. If Hamilton wins at Hungaroring 2010, he will become only the third driver to win there three times, matching the legendary Ayrton Senna and coming to within one win of Michael Schumacher's record. Ironically, his first-placed finishes there came in 2007 and 2009, on either side of his 2008 Drivers Championship victory.
