The gambling industry continues to boom in Macau, as casino revenue rose 50 percent in October 2010 on the figures from the same period 12 months earlier. Total gambling revenue for the Chinese territory's six casino operators reached $2.4 billion for the month, up from $1.6 billion in October 2009, the Gaming Inspection and Coordinate Bureau announced. The figures were aided by China's Golden Week holiday. This brings to more than $19 billion overall revenue for 2010, 59 percent up on the first 10 months of 2009. Chinese Betting The strong figures were derived mostly from the large number of arrivals from mainland China, which constituted some 53 percent of total visitors to Macau from January to September of this year. That figure rose to a 70 percent during the Golden Week, when some 685,000 people overall visited the peninsula. Stocks in most of the gambling operators rose as the good news came in: Sands China rose 1.2 percent to HK$17.10 just before the data's release, while SJM Holdings rose 3.1 percent to HK$11.88. Shares in Wynn Macau, Galaxy Entertainment, Melco International Development and Crown Ltd. Also rose as the date was made public. Global Dominance Although Las Vegas still has the reputation, Macau is now well and truly the world's biggest center for gambling, having taken over from its American counterpart statistically as long ago as 2006.
After even more than the usual dose of off-season drama, the 2010/11 NBA season is finally underway, and unsurprisingly the Miami Heat and Los Angeles Lakers are favored to face off in the NBA finals, according to the odds from both Las Vegas and other online bookmakers. While it will take a while for star signings LeBron James and Chris Bosh and veteran Dwayne Wade to all gel together as a team, the Heat, 15/8 at online bookmaker 888, just edge out the Lakers, 9/4, for championship favoritism. So dominant are the two that the next teams in the odds are Boston and Orlando, way back at 10/1, Chicago, 14/1, and Oklahoma City, 16/1. As you may have noticed, that means there won't be many teams challenging the Lakers for supremacy over in the West, which has been the stronger conference for many years now. Such is the dominance of Phil Jackson's men that they are an odds-on 8/13 to win the conference championship, leading Oklahoma City, 11/1, and Dallas and San Antonio, 12/1 each. The East's Central Division and the West's Southwest Division present the tightest battles for the six divisional titles. In the former, Chicago, 4/7, will face a strong challenge from the Milwaukee Bucks 9/4, while in the latter a four-way battle will take place between Dallas, 13/8, San Antonio, 7/4, and Houston and New Orleans, 6/1 each.

Do you have "lucky" lottery numbers - the ones you write down week after week, hoping that loyalty to your chosen digits will eventually pay off? Have you ever questioned the wisdom of this strategy of consistency? Whether or not this approach really boosts your chances of a jackpot, you might be heartened by this story of a recent Saturday night lottery draw... Identical Jackpot Numbers On October 16, Israeli lottery fans were dumbfounded to see six numbers come up that were identical to the winning numbers drawn on September 21 - just a few weeks before. The numbers-6, 33, 32, 26, 14 and 13-emerged in a different order, but that didn't lessen the astonishment after the massive coincidence was pointed out. 128 Winners Three lucky people split the jackpot prize of over $3 million, while 92 second place winners pocketed "consolation" prizes of just over $1000 each, and 33 winners in the double category got approximately $2,200. The number of secondary prizes won was unusually high. It's not known if any of the winners had picked exactly the same numbers in the September draw. Crazy Coincidences Such coincidences are extremely unusual, but they happen more often than you might expect. Just this year, OCR has reported on some unique incidents in the unpredictable world of lotteries... In July, Joan Ginther of Austin, Texas, USA, won the lottery for an incredible fourth time in 17 years. Her latest prize was $10,000,000; won on a $50 scratch card. She has notched up an unbelievable $20 million in lottery wins since 1993. In September, another American lottery fan, Ernest Pullen, of Missouri, bagged his second massive lottery win within just four months. Between June and October he went from ordinary to guy to multimillionaire - his first scratch card landing him a tidy $1 million, with the second card bringing in a further $2,000,000.
London is set to get back its famous Playboy club next year, Playboy Enterprises and London Clubs International announced. The new venue, to be situated in the exclusive Mayfair area, will include a members club, lounge, restaurant and casino area including table games and high-limit private gaming rooms. It is scheduled to open in the first half of 2011. Playboy's founder, Hugh Hefner, plans to open the similar establishments in China, Mexico and Florida. The company is planning two more clubs - in Cancun, Mexico, and South Beach, Florida - to join the two existing clubs in Las Vegas and now London. More US high school girls and college-aged boys are gambling online, according to a new survey. The National Annenberg Survey of Young found that 16% of college-aged males gamble online on a monthly basis, a big increase from the last survey in 2008 when the figure was at 4.4%. It's the same picture with high school girls, whose monthly online gambling has tripled since 2008, rising from 0.5% to 1.5%, although they are still less likely to gamble than boys their age. The Bigger Picture Before the alarm bells ring too loudly, consider the fact that when taking into account stats for both online and offline gambling, the survey actually shows decreased gambling activity. Participation in online and offline gambling remained about the same for college-age girls and dropped for males of both high school and college age, compared to the 2008 survey. The survey also found thatdespite the increase of gambling in some groups, the symptoms of problem gambling have dropped dramatically from 12.1% in 2008 to 2.9% in 2010. The figure falls below 2% for young girls. National Projections The survey was conducted by the Annenberg Adolescent Communication Institute at the University of Pennsylvania and has captured the current state of youth gambling. The university surveyed 596 youths between the ages of 14 to 22. If the survey results are projected on a national basis they indicate that 1.7 million US males aged 18 to 22 and around 530,000 high school boys gamble online at least once a month. Boys' Favorite Online Gambling Activity The survey also revealed that the most popular form of online gambling for young males (whatever their age) has remained unchanged since the last survey. Boys responding to the survey indicated that sports betting is their favorite pursuit, with around 25% indicating they placed a sports bet in an 'average month'.
