What has it been? One week since the 60 Minutes ran an item about the risks and dangers of online gambling? Oh that was a scary one, wasn't it? Well, don't be scared. Lovely Lara Logan will take care of you. But maybe not as caringly as she has Billy Walters. Billy Walters Billy Walters is known as the most successful sports betting gambler in the world. He became publicly known in 1986, when he led a team of gamblers (the Computer Group) which won $3.8 million using a roulette system on an old wheel in an Atlantic City casino. Shifting to Las Vegas sportsbooks, Walters claims a lifelong 57% winning percentage on his sports bets. 60 Minutes With the anti-online gambling item of January 9, 2011, titled "Slot Machines: The Big gamble", still fresh in mind, the CBS News program ran an "Entertainment Video" on a sports betting gambler. Joining Billy Walters, practically rubbing arms as she stands with him on the grass during a golf game for $5,000, referring to his earnings as "that's a lot of money", and - well, I tired of watching after a few minutes, to be honest - lovely Lara Logan dared not criticize Las Vegas sports betting. My Take I admire Billy Walters. Let that be said. And CBS Chief Foreign Affairs Correspondent Lara Logan is a good looking woman, by all means, and has done some important work in the past. A picture of Logan is in place: Sometimes I watch 60 Minutes, too. That's a fact. But why on earth would CBS grill Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell for wanting to legalize online gambling in his state one week, and then shift to an easy-watching, entertainment piece about another gambler the next? What's your take on this? Use the comments space below. Am I wrong?

The signature of Governor Chris Christie is all that remains now for New Jersey to become the first state in United States to regulate online gambling. The Intra-State Internet Gambling bill passed both houses of the legislature last week, paving the way for New Jersey casinos to accept bets online. Atlantic City Online Under the law, Atlantic City casinos would be able to provide online version of their games to the state's almost 9 million residents. According to the legislation, those offerings could include poker, blackjack, craps, slots, roulette, baccarat and more. Bill S3167 passed the Senate with a majority of 34-2 after enjoying bipartisan sponsorship from Democrat Ray Lesniak and Republican Joe Kryillos. Earlier it had passed the lower house Assembly by a 63-11 margin. Christie now has 45 days to sign the bill into law, or it will become law automatically at the end of that period. Tax Revenue A report published by the Interactive Media Entertainment and Gaming Association, the trade industry that represents internet gambling, estimated that the New Jersey laws could raise up to $250 million in revenue and bring up to $55 million in taxes to state coffers. With California and other states now looking at similar legislation, this latest development in New Jersey may just be the push the online gambling industry needed in the USA.
The British government is considering a plan to oust foreign-based online gambling operators from the country, according to a report in the local Daily Mail. Credit Cards Targeted According to the report, Secretary for Culture, Media, Olympics and Sport Jeremy Hunt wants to fight gambling addiction by putting an end to all advertising from companies not based in Britain. There would also be a ban on using credit cards for internet gambling under the proposal. Should the move go ahead, it would remove literally hundreds of gaming operators from Britain and no doubt have an effect on the industry in Europe and the rest of the world. The Daily Mail quoted a senior government official as saying that ministers are concerned about the proliferation of online gambling since the former Labour government introduced the controversial Gambling Act in 2005. Offshore Companies Under those laws, the UK instituted tougher laws that ensured that online gambling operators did not target the underage and vulnerable. However, a loophole in the law has allowed offshore companies to offer their products while not always meeting the standards required of local companies. Under the new proposal, all offshore companies entering the UK market would first have to apply for an online gambling license, just as UK online casinos do today.

The Bank of America website crashed continuously throughout the day on Friday last week, causing panic for customers of US online gambling sites. The crash was a reminder of the ever looming threat of crackdowns over the effective US online gambling ban, which was legislated for under the 2006 Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act that outlawed the transfer of funds from financial institutions to internet gambling sites. Routine Systems Change On Friday it was the turn of Bank of America customers to wonder whether there was a particular reason why they were unable to access their online casino, online poker or sports book accounts, but fortunately it turned out the problems were the result of a routine systems change, a spokesperson for the bank said. Rumors had circulated that the slowdown had resulted from a possible upcoming dump of internal documents from whistle blowing website Wikileaks, although the bank said the problems had nothing to do with security. Banking Issues Bank of America is not the first financial institution to have experienced such problems in recent months. Several other banks have had their online banking systems crash, causing problems for customers all around the country, including those using sports gambling and other gaming websites.
