Update: Full Tilt Poker License

Online poker enthusiasts have had to endure fallout from the FullTilt Poker debacle of late. Owing to the intensive investigation into allegations of illegal online gaming activity in the USA, Full Tilt Poker (FTP) has been under intense scrutiny. On the 29th June 2011, an announcement was made from the Channel Islands to the effect that Full Tilt Poker's license had been suspended. This is a direct consequence of the investigation conducted by the Attorney General of the Southern District of New York. Payback Time? Not Yet! At the heart of the matter is the fact that Full Tilt Poker has failed to pay back players' funds since the 15th April 2011 "Black Friday" saga. That incident changed the course of online poker gaming and US FTP players have been unable to get their money out of their online gaming accounts. Full Tilt Poker pro Tom Dwan, intimated on Twitter that he would pay out $1 million of his own cash to FTP players who were not refunded their gaming cash. Player expectations are at an all-time high but payouts are slow in coming. PokerStars has paid out $100 million already, while FTP appeared to be buying time. Now the cards have been dealt and FTP will have to up the ante if they're go make good on their intention to overturn the license suspension. The hearing with the AGCC is set for the 26th July 2011. Most Recent Developments In related news, popular online payment processing giant - Moneybookers - has now made it clear that it will no longer process transactions for or on behalf of Full Tilt Poker. The terms of the license cancellation mean 4 things for FTP: No fund withdrawals by existing customers No poker gaming or gambling activity No new player registrations No new player deposits Full Tilt Poker competitor, PokerStars has meanwhile assuaged players that their funds are safe. PokerStars is licensed by the Isle of Man Gaming Commission. Full Tilt Poker has had to shut down its entire global network and it is prohibited from offering any poker gaming to players.

Where Next for Full Tilt Poker?

Much has transpired in the online poker gaming world since the April 15th "Black Friday" saga of this year. It was on that fateful day that the FBI and the US DoJ seized multiple online poker sites and sportsbetting enterprises. The Poker Players Alliance (PPA) no doubt was up in arms about these shocking developments. Beyond the committees and commissions, it was really the players who suffered most. Poker has long been portrayed as a game of skill, luck and strategy. Online poker gaming has thus been perceived differently to regular online casino gaming. Therein lies the dilemma - what's good for one is surely good for the other - no? Poker stalwarts in the USA, including the erstwhile Barney Frank and other leading pro-poker advocates were pushing hard for recognition of this poker a skill game. Full Tilt Poker Now, but a few months later on, news has emerged that the Alderney Gambling Control Commission (AGCC) has suspended Full Tilt Poker's license on a global scale. This doesn't bode well for players at FTP. The problem is that $100 million are potentially locked away with this gaming powerhouse. Even FTP pro Tom Dwan said he'd be willing to pay out $1 million of his own cash to players. After Full Tilt Full Tilt Poker cannot accept new players, cannot pay out, cannot offer gambling/gaming activities. The exit of FTP from the world stage will see other big name poker powerhouses stepping up to fill the void. These include 888poker, PartyPoker, PokerStars and others. While the UIGEA in the USA forbids payment processors from transferring cash to gambling sites, European poker rooms are still safe for now. Euros over Dollars What's about to unfold is anyone's guess. But this poker pro feels that the safe money is on the European based gaming sites. At least there you're getting paid without getting played!

Full Tilt Ails, But Poker Strives On

First, the Alderney Gambling Control Commission suspended the operating license of Full Tilt Poker. What little credibility is had kept - until a hearing scheduled for July 26 - the poker site seems due to lose. Now we hear that the Kahnawake Gaming Commission is also reviewing the poker site's license, granted by the jurisdiction. Who Benefits? Full Tilt, clearly, is suffering. It is not common for a poker site to have its license suspended, much less common for a site with millions of customers. So far, practically all poker sites that are not Full Tilt benefit, particularly poker sites run by European online gaming groups. Of these, PokerStars is the main poker site to draw disappointed Full Tilt players. Others are, 888, and Playtech, mainly their bet365 Poker brand. Small Caveat However, some "alternative" poker sites seeing this new traffic at its tables face potential lawsuits, investigations, regulations and license issues themselves! PokerStars is facing potential heat from US authorities; PokerStars were targeted too on the Black Friday that started all this mess for Full Tilt. It is safe to assume that while FTP won't disappear from our online poker world, the other sites won't convert all the traffic to their sites either. The dust will settle. But for now, a reshuffling of the cards.

Full Tilt Poker an Investment Opportunity?

Sure, Full Tilt Poker is at an all time low, having its operating license suspended this week by the Alderney Gambling Control Commission. Furthermore, Full Tilt is bound to live in limbo, at least until July 26, when a hearing is scheduled. In come the sharks. European investors have reportedly shown interest in purchasing the once mighty , currently ailing, poker site. The deal, as reported in the LA Times, is to acquire a majority stake in Full Tilt Poker's parent company, Pocket Kings, which is based in Dublin. It is believed that the investors will pay the $150 million or so still owed to players in the US, following the crackdown, which came to be known as Black Friday. Clearing up issues with the US players will surely lead to clearing up issues with Alderney, though these have yet to be clearly stated, and might not be until the hearing takes place later this month. Poker, Gambling and Investing This is a prime example, how poker sites are actual, real-world mega-companies. Like other mega-companies, and even real currencies, poker sites are investments. It is no surprise then that poker players often find excitement and thrills - as well as a profit to be made - at betting exchange sites, online trading, forex currency trading and the like. It is a matter of time - or a good search on forex trading sites - until the Full Tilt Poker site deal is open for investment by you too.
