Chile in Full Force to Battle Spain

It would be safe to say that the winners of the 2010 World Cup would be contenders for the title again in 2014. In their first game of the 2014 World Cup, Spain got hit with more goals than they allowed in the entire 2010 tournament. Clearly off form and looking very slow against the Dutch, Spain will need to change a lot if they are intending to make it through the next round, let alone make it to the final stages this year. With the world focused on Spain, not much attention has been put on Chile. This team is impressive and incredible to watch. Although their defense is questionable needing to rely on Gonzalo Jara and Gary Medel whom are to physically short to successfully defend against aerial attacks, the young team showed skill and vast talent in their 3-1 win against Australia. One-sided history Chile and Spain have met 10 times in the past, 8 games have been won by Spain while Chile has drawn twice but still have yet to win. Spain has scored 25 goals compared to Chile's 8 but as recent history has showed us, this World Cup is a different. Spain is rolling with basically the same lineup for tonight as the game with the Netherlands albeit with a few changes. With names like Iniesta, Xavi, Fabregas, Alonso etc on the roster at Vicente del Bosque's disposal, Spain could have only needed to knock off the game 1 jitters and will show their true colors tonight. Chile had an excellent performance from their squad against Australia but will need to have a bigger game from Jean Beausejour, Alexis Sánchez, and Jorge Valdívia if they want to have a chance against Spain.

And the Winner is...Top Betting Operators for the World Cup

In this week's eGaming Review poll, Paddy Power and Bet365 have been revealed as the favored betting sites for World Cup success. Voters Reward Preparation A landslide near two thirds of respondents rewarded the hard work and strategy that these two operators invested in their marketing in the days, weeks, and months leading up to the Cup. Revenues to Double Total revenues for the month covering the duration of the Cup are expected to reach nearly £1bn, with operators such as William Hill predicting 100% revenue increases from the 2010 tournament. The Poll The eGaming reader poll was multiple choice, asking readers to choose their favorite operators positioned to make a splash at the World Cup—kind of a World Cup tournament for betting houses. The Big Four “finalists” for the readers to choose from included Paddy Power, Bet365, William Hill, and Betfair. Paddy Power and Bet365 were chosen by readers as best positioned, receiving 30% and 31% of the reader votes, respectively. Different Marketing Strategies Yet each operator has taken a contrasting approach to marketing in the World Cup buildup. While Bet 365 was quietly concentrating on optimizing its service in time for the World Cup, Paddy Power embarked on an aggressive campaign with edgy adverts through social media such as the tweet of an image of a Brazilian rainforest whose trees were chopped down to spell out the words “C’mon England, PP.” The remaining voting results had William Hill and Betfair tied with exactly 19% of the vote. Both these operators had launched similar PR campaigns leading up to the World Cup. It will be interesting to see how betting operators adapt their advertising in the wake of the results.

World Cup Spurs Increase in China's Sports Lottery Sales

In keeping with a World Cup tradition, China's National Sports Lottery Management Center has announced sales of over 150 million yuan ($24 million) for the first day of sports lotteries for the 2014 FIFA World Cup, a blistering pace set on opening day. Sports Lottery Format The sports lottery format was introduced for the first time in the Chinese market, in 2001. Sports “lotteries” is the designation given to a rapid fire type of betting, with wagers placed on which team will win a given match. Wagers are also available on game scores, and potentially a whole array of game-time features, actions and statistics. Today's Technology: Ease of Betting Bets are placeable via PCs and Mobile devices, as well as offline. Lotteries seek to target amateur buyers with relatively simple wagers whose visibility the widest milieu of individuals have access to. The winning bets are awarded a prize according to a predetermined ratio set by the betting organization. This ratio is made known to all bettors by the provider before placing any bets. World Cup Spike Like all betting activity surrounding the World Cup, sports lottery format sales also spike during the World Cup. In the powerful Chinese economy, sports lotteries in general are gaining popularity, with the 132.8 billion yuan in sales for 2013 representing an annual increase of 20.2 percent. Smartphone Wagering Benefit The availability of betting on smartphones represents a tremendous sales facilitator, as physical sports lottery vendors are not evenly distributed. Obviously, the online availability of the sports lottery cuts that obstacle right out. This new vehicle translated to online sports lottery sales of 42 billion yuan in 2013, a 62.79 percent jump from the previous year. Predictions call for that figure to increase next year to approximately 60 billion yuan.

Royal Ascot Ready to Race

When it comes to style, grace and time tested tradition, few sporting events come anywhere as close as the Royal Ascot.  The Racecourse was first established in 1711 at the request of Queen Anne and there has been royal presence therein since then.  The Queen has had much success at the raceway including her horse Estimate with a Gold Cup win in 2013.  Royal Treatment The Ascot is not just about the ponies, it's about the style and the who's who.  This is one of the high society events of the year and everyone will be there.  Each day kicks off with a the royal horse drawn carriage procession from Windsor Castle to Ascot followed by the top-quality horse racing in the world.    The event itself is monstrous - with over 400 helicopters, 1,000 limousines and a plethora of super cars that transport the elite guests to and from the course.  Lucky attendees are greeted by 300 in-house stewards and more than 700 stewarding staff to give the true royal treatment.  There is also over 300 top class chefs and 12 private dining facilities available.   Gold Cup Today marks the all important Gold Cup which will be run in front of the biggest crowds of the week. England Will Look to Silence Suarez and Co

England face Uruguay on 19 June in Sao Paulo with both sides hoping that they will have already enjoyed a positive start to the tournament. Either way, this fixture will either represent a chance to all but book a place in the knock-out stages or an opportunity for redemption following a disappointing start to the World Cup. England will be all too aware of the dangers posed by Uruguay's attack. If Oscar Tabarez's side go far in Brazil, then the impressive odds at William Hill Sports on the likes of Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani to finish as top tournament goal scorer will surely shorten considerably. England know all about Suarez. The Liverpool striker ripped Premier League defences apart last season. His strike partner Cavani has also been one of the top strikers in European club football for a number of years. And if Suarez and Cavani don't produce the goods, then veteran Diego Forlan still offers a potent threat from the bench. Can England Quell the Uruguayan Attack? All of which means that this will be a big test for England's defence. It is a unit with very little World Cup experience. It will be a debut tournament for Everton pair Leighton Baines and Phil Jagielka, plus his central defensive partner Gary Cahill. Jagielka and Cahill have performed well together so far, but it will be a huge responsibility and test of their quality to keep the Uruguayan attack quiet. However, if they can do so successfully, then England stand every chance of a positive result.

Japan and Greece Fight for Survival Tonight

The Estadio das Dunas at Natal sees Group C competitors Japan and Greece meeting tonight (11pm UK time) for a thrilling fight for survival. Both teams have lost their Group C openers, and it'll be the end of this World Cup for the team which loses tonight– unless we see a draw.Ivory Coast HeartbreakJapan played good against Ivory Coast, climbing to an early advantage when Keisuke Honda slipped a strike into the net in the 16th minute, but Ivory Coast proceeded to overwhelm Japan in possession and attempts at keeper's Eiji Kawashima net who valiantly delivered save after save. Sadly for Samurai BLue, the classic rule of "he who doesn't score gets scored" proved itself, and Japan conceded two quick goals in succession in the second half.Don't Respect Greece Too MuchSpeaking after the game, goalscorer Honda said that he felt his teammates had too much respect for Ivory Coast's players. "There were some dangerous players of Ivory Coast and there are some of Greece too and we need to show the respect to them but it is better not to show it too much," said Honda to the press, guaranteeing that despite having their back against the wall, Japan's confidence is still solid.Mitroglou for Greek Rescue Ethniki's opening was a painful one, witnessing a shutout 3-0 loss to Colombia. For tonight's match, Greece coach Fernando Santos is expected to start with striker Kostas Mitroglou, the team's top scorer in the qualifying stages who was out due to knee injuries throughout the year but played a little after coming off the bench against Colombia. The Greeks have nothing to lose and they'll play offensive, but that applies for Japan also who promised an aggressive game; whoever wins tonight, we're up for one hell of a game!

This Week in International Regulation News

This week there have been a lot of worldwide developments in the online gambling industry. Here are the latest headlines from around the globe.UK Tax Bill Faces Final CommitteeA new finance bill in the UK that would introduce a 15% tax on online bookie profits will face a final committee before being passed into law. During this final review stage, MPs will have the chance to raise concerns they have over all details covered by the bill. The bill has thus far enjoyed bipartisan approval, so amendments are thought to be unlikely. The UK government predicts that this new law will generate approximately £300 million per year, but some believe that the 15% rate is too high, and will ultimately damage the iGaming industry. Opponents include the Remote Gambling Association, which claims that any tax above 10% will drive black market growth.  Dutch Gaming Authority Warns Operators Against World Cup MarketingWith the World Cup underway, the Dutch Gaming Authority has issued a warning to national operators who are targeting customers in the country. Advertising to the public is illegal in the Netherlands under the Gaming Act, and between five and ten online operators received letters reminding them of this after the Dutch regulator witnessed a spike in marketing activity.Dutch Secretary of State Fred Teeven commented that operators who are currently breaking Dutch law “are playing with fire,” and their chances of receiving/renewing a Dutch gaming license are slim. The Future of Online Licensing in GermanyGermany’s Interstate Treaty has been the object of a recently concluded legal case, though no resolution has been reached. The case consisted of local operator Digibet challenging the legality of having two separate licensing regimes within the country. The two regimes are Germany’s Interstate Treaty, introduced in 2012, and the German state Schleswig-Holstein.The Court of Justice of the European Union ruled against Digibet, stating that two licensing regimes within the same country does not contradict EU law. However, Germany’s future regarding its regulatory procedure is still uncertain. Portugal to Push Online Gaming RegulationsPortugal’s current legislative session is scheduled to end on July 10, 2014, but parliament wants to address the issue of online gaming before it does. The EU troika is largely behind the push to address the issue, since online gaming regulation has the ability to increase tax revenue. The troika consists of the European Union, International Monetary Fund and European Central Bank. The proposed bill has a tax rate ranging between 15-20% of gross gaming revenue, but differences of opinion lie in the structuring of the licensure. Portugal currently has one regulated operator in Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa, which is a betting and lottery operator that invests approximately 28% of its GGR into charitable causes.
