Robot sports events become a reality with China’s Robo League. We delve into the tech, the uncanny valley it creates, and how we can elevate the gambling niche with these advancements.
Only years after Elon Musk began posting images of awkward robot dogs and bipedal automatons stumbling across flat surfaces, we started seeing footage of more advanced models effortlessly parkouring through complex environments.
Now, these robots are moving out of the lab and onto the sports field. The reaction has been equal parts elation and discomfort. Join us as we explore why this is the case.
Earlier this month, China did the unthinkable and hosted a soccer tournament where the only players on the field were robots powered by a sophisticated artificial intelligence (AI).
The AI-driven soccer teams successfully competed in the “Robo League” in Beijing with very little intervention from their human hosts.
The tournament consisted of several 3-on-3 football matches where the only requirement was that the players interact completely free of human intervention.

While there are some humorous clips online of competitors being carried off on stretchers, organiser feedback reveals that this was, in fact, a positive outcome.
According to media coverage, this was not the first event of this type in China. The previous matches were played a year ago, and in that event, the robots could barely let alone run after a ball, as their mechanics failed continuously, causing them to fall over.
During this event, the players maintained their positions on the field, barely suffered mechanical issues, and reached speeds of 1 meter per second (3.6 km/h). This was achieved while also tracking the ball's movement across the pitch with 90% Accuracy up to 20m away.

Humanity has always been intrigued by the idea of creating life in its own image. Just look at some of our most popular stories. In Pygmalion, a sculpture falls in love with his creation and begs the gods to give her life, while Pinocchio is about a man who carves a puppet that magically becomes sentient.
As we grew in our understanding of the power of science, we see stories like Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, where a genius uses electricity to reanimate an assortment of body parts.
As science became more integrated into everyday life, our cultural stories shifted, allowing our creations to be helpers and friends, not just cautionary tales.
This shift also helped sci-fi to become an important literary and entertainment genre, giving us characters like Twiki (Buck Rogers in the 25th Century), R2D2 and 3CPO (the Star Wars franchise), and the iconic T-800 played by Arnold Schwarzenegger in the Terminator franchise.
It is the Terminator storyline that is most influential in the world’s view of the dangers of letting technology run ahead of our ability to control it, as Skynet begins as a way to help advance humanity, only for its controlling AI to see us as the planet’s greatest threat. A threat which needs to be eradicated.
These days, ambulatory robotics and AI-powered tech are advancing so fast, most people haven’t even realised just how far the field has come, which can make it feel like it's “too much, too soon”.

AI and robotics are advancing fast, sometimes faster than we’re ready for. One way to keep up is to explore how they might enhance one of our favourite pastimes: online gambling.
With AI-powered robots already competing in soccer tournaments, there is guaranteed to be a demand for sports betting. While China does not allow legal gambling, once these types of events hit the global stage, you can bet leading sportsbooks will be offering fantastic odds on them.
These bets could include which bot will need a stretcher first, which will score first, and which team will win.
We could even see robotics branch out into other sports. Much like in the film Real Steel, starring Hugh Jackman, the idea of robot boxing and other combat sports (albeit sans a human controlling the action) is not that far from becoming a reality.
If we see the rise of Robot Sport Stars, the next question is: would you buy merch featuring a robot soccer player?
Live dealer casino games are popular amongst players looking for that human connection while gambling at a mobile casino, but the idea of having a fully autonomous robot dealer is guaranteed to draw a crowd of players from around the world.
The robo-croupier can easily switch between game types, will rarely require breaks, and can speak intelligently on any number of topics. Only requires minor updates to learn new languages, and can offer insights on odds, outcomes and other tips that players need instantly, making them the ideal live casino engagement point.
Esports is already considered a high-value betting market, but it could be taken to the next level with the inclusion of a robotics-based event where human teams compete with or against AI-powered players.
While game formats like PvPvE (Player versus Player versus Environment) already exist, replacing the current digital-only Environment with a physical robot would generate buzz on social media and attract both viewers and investors.

While we wait for robot dealers and bot-athletes to hit the big time, there's no shortage of high-tech entertainment to keep us occupied.
From live-streamed casino tables to esports arenas buzzing with action, we already have access to some of the most entertaining ways to gamble online. And none of it involves bots needing to be wheeled off the field for us to have a good time.
