Gambling in the Isle of Man, a territory located in the Irish Sea, is legal and the government is working hard to encourage further growth in the online gambling industry.

The Gambling Control Commission has developed a reputation for trying to ensure that all online casino games are fair. In fact, the Isle of Man was one of the first jurisdictions around the world to pass a law (the Online Gambling Regulations Act) to protect the rights of players.

The industry is now booming in the Isle of Man and several major companies, such as, Microgaming and Playtech, have set up business there. There are currently 16 licence holders in total with several more in the pipeline. These operators have also possibly been lured by the zero percent income tax for corporations, which is no small incentive during these difficult financial times.

The beginning

The Isle of Man legalized e-Gaming early in the previous decade. First, they passed the Electronic Transactions Act (2000) and a year later the Online Gambling Regulation Act (2001). By mid-year they already issued the first license to an online gambling operator.

Online gambling operators, small and large, quickly obtained licenses from the country, but the practice was reversed by 2003.

Licensing has since been reinstated. They are overseen by the Department of Trade and Industry.
