Two American Catholic leaders have joined millions of other people placing wagers on the result of the 2009 NBA Finals. Los Angeles Cardinal Roger Mahony and Orlando Bishop Thomas Wenski have agreed on a friendly bet on the outcome of the best-of-seven series between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Orlando Magic, the Associated Press reported last week. Mahony bet a case of Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels-labeled wines in the event of a Lakers loss, while Wenski has offered three key lime pies, Florida's official state pie, four pounds of fresh shrimp and a bottle of oxygen. Wenski said the bottle of oxygen was thrown in as an extra because of the pollution problems in Los Angeles. With two games down in the series, Wenski and the bookmakers will be praying Orlando turns things around when the series moves to Florida. The Kobe Bryant-led Lakers have firmed to even shorter odds following their victories, with UK-based bookmaker Ladbrokes now offering 1.20 odds on a Lakers championship, compared to 4.50 for Orlando. Game three takes place Tuesday night.
The Minnesota Department of Public Safety has dropped enforcement action against Internet Service Providers that provide access to online gambling sites, it was announced last week. The department had earlier in 2009 written to 11 ISPs asking them to block access to around 200 gambling Websites. In making the announcement, Representative Pat Garofalo credited the Poker Players Alliance and the Interactive Gaming Council with contributing to the decision. Garofalo said the agreement was reached after the "legal position underlying the issuance of the notices was reconsidered." The PPA, with more than 15,000 members in the state of Minnesota and more than one million members in the entire US, played a major role in the campaign against the anti-poker moves. "Minnesota poker players made our voices heard, the state listened and ended its ill-advices and improper attempt to circumvent the rights of Minnesota poker players," said PPA Minnesota State Director Matthew Werden. "We commend Representative Garofalo for literally taking this misguided effort head on and resolving it without incident."
There isn't a single roulette player who isn't instantly drawn to the action with the words "Place your bets." With the signature betting pad laid out in front and the roulette wheel off to the side, it's all systems go as a whirlwind of opportunity unfolds before your very eyes. Variety Online roulette offers the convenience of high-intensity casino action from the comforts of one's personal space. Realistic casino sounds, dazzling graphics, multiple platforms and quick turnaround times make online roulette a choice option for enthusiasts. But it's the pace of play too that makes this a preferred game. All the spins are shown in high quality visuals, often with a juxtaposed spinning wheel shot inset onto the page. American and European versions Naturally there are fans of both versions and for the novice this constitutes the fundamental difference between the two: American roulette tables have 38 numbers, owing to the addition of the 00 and European tables have only 37 numbers. Statisticians point to the greater likelihood of winning on a table with fewer numbers - the European roulette version - but both forms of the game provide exciting plays and big jackpots. French Roulette One cannot dismiss arguably the crème de la crème of roulette - the French version. This is what purists enjoy - since the origins sprung from France. There are many advantages to playing this version. Besides the aesthetics of all red cloth and French script, there are 37 numbers - like European roulette and the La Partage benefit. You only lose half your bet if you place a wager on an even number and it lands on 0. The popularity of roulette has swelled dramatically in recent years, owing to its accessibility away from land-based casinos. With the online versions, folks are able to sneak in a spin at work, at home or on the go. By the time the wheel stops spinning, some fabulous winnings may be making their merry way into your account.
A new poker reality television series is set to hit US screens in August, featuring four online poker players fighting for $2 million in prize money. "2 months, $2 million", to be broadcast on cable channel G4, will feature Jason "Pr1nnyraid" Rosenkrantz, Dani "Ansky" Stern, Emil "Whitelime" Patel and Brian "Flawless Victory" Roberts in 10-half hour episodes. It includes general interest programming and shows devoted to the world of video games. This is the channel's first foray into the world of poker reality TV. "It's a huge challenge. That's part of the fun of the show, watching them go on this incredible journey. For our audience, both the stakes and the lifestyle are the whole package. You want to come back to see if they win or lose."

Although the NBA and NHL finals are in full-swing, there are many other big sporting events with global betting appeal taking place over the coming months. Twenty20 World Cup The 2009 ICC World Twenty20 is taking place in England through the whole of June, following the success of the inaugural tournament in South Africa in 2007. In contrast to Test and one-day cricket, Twenty20 has made the game more unpredictable, robbing Australia of the key ingredients that have seen it dominate the other versions of the game for the last 15 years. Reigning Twenty20 champion India is joined by South Africa as odds favorite at this current tournament, both listed at 3.75 by Ladbrokes. New Zealand and Pakistan, both 8.00, and Australia, 9.00, follow. The final takes place on June 21 at Lord's in London. Wimbledon With the clay-court season finished, attention turns to the All England Club in London for the world's most prestigious tennis tournament, being held from June 22 to July 5. The world's top two, Switzerland's Roger Federer and Spain's Rafael Nadal, have both recently shown themselves to be beatable when playing against lower-ranked players, making this year's tournament a little more open than in previous years. Federer leads the betting, 2.25 at Ladbrokes, with Nadal, 3.25, and local Andy Murray, 4.00, not far behind. As usual, up to 10 players have a big chance of winning the women's singles, led by the Williams sisters Serena, 3.50, and Venus, 4.00, and Russian Maria Sharapova, 7.00. Major League Baseball With a third of the season gone, the contenders are set to be separated from the also-rans during a fierce summer of competition. Perennial champions the New York Yankees predictably lead the betting in the American League - the Yankees are a 3.00 Bet365 favorite, just ahead of arch-rivals the Boston Red Sox at 3.20. The Los Angeles Dodgers, with an MLB-best 39-19 at present, are a clear 3.60 to win the National League.
Wayne Allyn Root, or W.A.R. as he's known to millions of US TV and radio admirers was a dyed-in-the-wool Republican for many years until the US Federal ban on online gambling got his goat. Root was a long-term supporter of the Republican ethos of smaller government and less meddling in the lives of ordinary Americans. However, the GOP's move to ban online gambling made no sense to him, and he left the party to become a leader of the American Libertarian movement. Root believes that the Republican fixation with the anti-gambling bill actually lost them the last US election. In fact, Root admits that he puts himself squarely behind long-time political opponent Barney Frank is his support of lifting the online gambling ban. Limiting Freedom The online gambling website Gambling 911 recently carried an article by Root where he outlines his reasons for leaving the Republican Party. He believed that while he supported the party's philosophy of market capitalism and fiscal freedom, he saw no sense in his former party's obsession with banning online gambling. His main beef lay in the GOP's apparent desire to limit the freedom of the individual. If Americans want to gamble 100 dollars in the privacy of their own bedroom, then what business is it of the US government? Risk - It's as American as Apple Pie Root sees risk as the lifeblood of American corporate life. Citing the early US pioneers as the first great American risk-takers he forms an unbroken chain from the early American entrepreneurs to the founders of corporate America. Without risk taking, America would not have its place as the world's greatest economic power. It's Not About Morality, Stupid! In spite of its calamitous defeat at the polls, the Republicans persist in supporting the online gambling ban. In their defense, they claim they're upholding the morality of the state. However, this logic fails because sports gambling is still legal as are land-based casinos. In addition, gambling addiction pales into insignificance compared to the damage caused by alcohol abuse and even obesity. Root points out that there are pretty few Republicans calling for a ban on alcohol or MacDonalds. With a potential tax income of around 50 billion dollars, Root sees no logic whatsoever in the Republican Party's stance on the online gambling ban. Indeed, he believes the current ban will only push the practice underground into the hands of organized crime who are delighted with the current ban.
A leading British TV company has just signed a deal with major online gambling service, PartyGaming to broadcast online bingo and casino games. Channel Five, one of the premier TV stations in the United Kingdom, has placed a bet on the growing online gambling market, and it's hoping for a big return. Dawn Airey, the chairperson of Channel Five, announced the deal as part of an enthusiastic move into the new digital entertainment age. Using the "Five" Brand The new online service will bear the famous "Five" brandname and is due to be launched in latter half of 2009. Airey stated that the TV channel is "looking aggressively at how to expand its presence in digital media both in terms of its core broadcast content as well as allied offerings that reflect the channel's unique sense of dynamism and fun." Going for Broke with PartyGaming Channel Five's move to partner with the online gaming company is largely seen as a move by the TV company to pick up the ball dropped by Airey's former employers, ITV. Its joint venture with PartyGaming complements Channel Five's advertising portal, Five FWD. This male-oriented TV service will provide a captive audience for the new online gambling channel.
