Representative Barney Frank (D - MA) will open the day Sunday at the World Series of Poker by calling out the ceremonial "Shuffle Up and Deal." The pro-gambling legislator will later field questions from the press and players at a news conference. Frank is already considered a friend of online gambling. His visit at the poker tournament is greatly anticipated, as Frank is moving ahead with new legislation that will repeal the current ban, known as the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act. HR 2267 and HR 2266 have over 40 supporters in congress by now. Hearings will be held in September. One of Frank's proposals sets the framework for a legal and regulated Internet gambling in the US. The other targets the UIGEA, crippling it from taking greater effect come December. Frank's visit is taking place on July 5, during the Independence Day weekend. The visit - and the tournament - will be carried live nationally on ESPN.
With Wimbledon finished for another year, the tennis betting world's attention now turns to the quarter-finals of the 2009 Davis Cup, which begin Friday. Just eight countries remain in the race to win the honor of being named champions in the famous competition's 110th year. The pick of the quarterfinals sees Croatia host the United States on clay in the coastal town of Porec. Although Croatia has won both previous encounters between the two nations, the Americans (4.50 equal-second favorite at online bookmaker Bet365 to win the Davis Cup) are favored to defeat Croatia, 11.00 to win the tournament. The hot form of Andy Roddick, Wimbledon runner-up, will certainly help the US as it aims to win the cup for a record 33rd time. Tournament favorites Spain - 11/10 favorites at William Hill Sports - will have to take on Germany, 33/1, without the injured Rafael Nadal. But despite missing the presence of their top player, who lost his world number one ranking this week after missing out on Wimbledon, Spain's top 20 singles players Fernando Verdasco and Tommy Robredo will prove tough to beat on clay and at home. The Czech Republic, 12/1, is considered the underdog in its quarterfinal against Argentina, 11/2, despite it being played on an indoor hard court in the Czech city of Ostrava. Argentina beat the Czechs in a 5-0 whitewash the last time the two teams met in 2005, and is looking to go one better than at the 2006 and 2008 Davis Cups, when it lost the final. The tournament's surprise team, Israel, 125.00, hosts Russia, 4.50, on an indoor hard court at Tel Aviv's Nokia Arena. The match was moved to the arena to allow for more spectators, but robs Israel of the advantage of playing outdoors in the heat at its usual home court. William Hill Sports is already eyeing the next ATP Grand Slam, the US Open. Atop the tennis betting odds there you will find who else but Roger Federer at 6/4. The Williams sisters Serena and Venus are 2/1 and 9/2 favorites, respectively.

Face the Ace will premiere on NBC on Saturday, August 1, with a series of seven one-hour episodes. Entry to qualification is free, with information to be made available soon at Full Tilt Poker.
Critic of military spending, protector of the environment and legislative leader on behalf of home owners across the United States, Representative Barney Frank (D - MA) visited Las Vegas on Sunday to speak at the World Series of Poker. His message at the event was a hopeful one. The powerful Congress member has kept been fighting against the current ban on online gambling. Two bills sponsored by Rep. Frank - HR2266 and HR2267 - aim to legalize online poker and delay UIGEA regulations from taking effect by one year. At WSOP, Frank told 1,700 poker players in attendance that he thinks online poker and online gambling are rights that need to be protected. In an overall hopeful message, he added that his bills will pass by next year. Discussion Rep. Frank spoke before the no limit Texas Holdem main event on Sunday. Some of the comments over his speech, courtesy of members of Hotair.com, included: "What you want to do with your own money is your own business." "Online gambling is illegal because those **** in DC can't figure out a fool proof way to tax the bejesus out of it. Yet..." "Can we please not call poker gambling?" "If the US would lift its restrictions, we'd have LESS fraud risk - you think Harrah's or Ceasar's Palace would want to get a reputation for cheating its customers?"
Online gambling will eventually be legalized in the United States, American investment bank Goldman Sachs predicted in a note sent to investors last week. According to the report, a legal online poker and casino market would be worth up to $12 billion, too great a benefit for lawmakers to ignore. "We believe it is logical to assume that the US market will eventually regulate - given the potential implications for US tax take, if nothing else," the bank said. "Were the market to be legalized, we believe that the size of the revenue opportunity could increase materially... Based on an assumption of 30% penetration of offline poker players and $300 gross gaming revenue (GGR) per player, we estimate that a legal poker market could be worth $3bn." The report reached its conclusions based on a "grossing up" of PartyGaming's intake relative to its nine percent of the market share. Based on that, the American poker market was found to be worth $1.5 billion in 2008. Despite the optimistic outlook, Goldman Sachs added efforts to regulate online gambling federally, could take time, and that efforts would move faster at a state level. It was recently reported that hearings on legislation introduced by US Congressman Barney Frank (D - MA) to overturn laws against online gambling have been delayed until at least September. Frank introduced HR 2267 and HR 2266 as part of the push he is leading to overturn the the2006 Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA), which effectively banned Internet gambling by outlawing the transfer of funds from financial institutions to gambling websites.

The Alderney Gambling Control Commission has decided to take meaningful steps towards streamlining its operations in order to meet the new regulatory structure. At the heart of their strategy are two different groups of stakeholders: businesses and consumers. The GES summit took place between 7-9th July and Alderney was a Gold Sponsor of the event. Amidst dramatic socio-economic change taking place on a global basis, the AGCC wanted a fresh perspective on a new licensing framework.
