The European Gaming and Betting Association (EGBA) is convening for a special day in Brussels today. Various challenges will be addressed and attendees will be working hard to reach a broad consensus from within industry ranks. Interpretation of the conference will be in English, German and French. Thanks to a William Hill iPhone app, a US-based gaming company is about to launch the first ever free sports betting application for residents of an American state through the iTunes app store.Nevada Free Sports Betting AppThe Nevada Gaming Control Board approved the application by American Wagering (which was bought by William Hill earlier this year) to let state residents place sports wagers from their iPhones, it was confirmed this week.The application is free to download and use, according to American Wagering senior vice-president John English, although he added that customers must open an account before they can place a wager. The stand-off at William Hill Online continues, after the company's Tel Aviv, Israel-based marketing staff walked off the job last week following the resignation of chief marketing officer Eyal Sanoff.Tel Aviv Walk-OutSome 185 Israeli employees of the William Hill-Playtech joint venture stopped work last Sunday in protest of Sanoff's resignation and rumors that William Hill Online will be moving its Tel Aviv operations to Gibraltar. British online gaming giant Sportingbet has said it will sell its controversial Turkish operations for at least 143 million euros, as part of its strategy to dispose of activities in unregulated territories.'Strategic move'Sportingbet CEO Andrew McIver called the sale of the Superbahis website to European online gaming firm GVC a sign of its "strategic intent." He said: "Following this disposal Sportingbet will derive the large majority of its earning from regulated territories."The proceeds from the sale will be used to grow Sportingbet's business in regulated markets or by fill-in acquisitions, the company said in a statement announcing the sale.Ladbrokes talks gave pushLadbrokes, Britain's largest betting agency, ended three-months of negotiations to purchase Sportingbet last week because of concerns over the latter's continuing operations in unregulated gambling markets such as Turkey - where online gambling is prohibited.Sportingbet said it had already been reviewing its Turkey operations before the Ladbrokes approach, as part of a strategy to increase the share of revenues it earns from properly regulated markets. It said that around half of gaming revenues will now come from regulated markets following the Turkey sale, with that figure set to rise to 70 percent once laws change in several European countries.

Gambling is booming in Italy, with total gaming wagers rising an annualized 25.45 percent in the first three quarters of this year to 55.2 billion euros, national gaming regulator AAMS said Tuesday.September Boosts Gambling DataSeptember was a particularly huge month for the local gambling industry, with total wagers reaching 6.896 billion euros, half of which were from slot machines, AAMS said in its statement.The annualized rise to September was greater than the 23.85% seen to August, and was recorded on the back of increased slot machine wagers at video lottery terminals.
