Melbourne has become the third Australian Football League club to sign with Darwin-based bookmaker Betezy after agreeing to a one-year partnership. The club announced that the deal would give Betezy strong signage presence at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, a dedicated website and online promotion and involvement at club events during the year. "We are very pleased to partner with Betezy in what is an exciting time for our respective organizations and look forward to working together throughout this year and hopefully beyond," said Melbourne CEO Cameron Schwab. Betezy is a newcomer to the world of Australian football, having been approved by the AFL on January 1, 2009, along with several other sports betting providers. Betezy had already inked deals with St. Kilda and the Adelaide Crows prior to finalizing its agreement with Melbourne. The bookmaker is licensed by the Northern Territory Government to accept bets via the Internet and telephone on racing, sports and entertainment.
In the summer of 2006, then CEO of BetonSports David Carruthers was arrested when passing through the Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport in Texas. The arrest came ahead of the passing of the UIGEA and was a sign for the coming. Well, the coming has arrived. Catherine Hanaway, a US attorney, said that Mr. Carruthers agreed to plead guilty to conspiracy charges in exchange for a reduced sentence. Carruthers, 51, will thus avoid a possible 20 year term in prison. Instead he will be expected to return some of the $16 million BetonSports customers lost when the online gaming company closed, and will face no more than 33 months in prison. His personal fine will be a mere $250,000. Carruthers will also assist in the prosecution of BetonSports' other top officials. Five other BetonSports defendants, including founder Gary Kaplan, face trial in September.
A new statistical study has been released showing that poker is a game of skill, not a game of chance as is claimed by anti-poker advocates. The Statistical Analysis of Texas Hold 'Em, conducted by Paco Hope of Cigital, Inc. and Sean McCulloch of Ohio Wesleyan University's Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, provide raw data showing that the outcomes of games are determined predominantly by the player's decisions, rather than by chance. Alfonso D'Amato, the head of the Poker Players Alliance, said the report backs up the arguments made my poker players worldwide that poker is a game of skill, and that players do not just rely on pure luck. "As a poker player I can tell you that knowing when to hold or fold is not based solely on the cards that are dealt, but a series of decisions based on skill and the actions taken by other players," D'Amato said. The study used data gather from 103 million hands of Texas Hold 'Em played online at PokerStars in December 2008. According to the report, more than 75 percent of the cases saw an outcome determined with no player even seeing more than their own cards and the community cards. Nearly a quarter of the hands required all the cards to be revealed to determine a winner, but only half those hands were won by the player with the best five-card hand.
March Madness is almost over, most of the teams have finished their seasons and are ready for a well-earned rest, and at the end of it all just two teams are left for Monday night's NCAA college basketball final - North Carolina and Michigan State. The four-time championship winners North Carolina Tar Heels go into the match a 7.5 point spread favorite with most Las Vegas and online sports books. That is despite the fact the game will be played in Michigan - at Detroit's Ford Field in front of an expected crowd of more than 70,000 people - where the two-time championship winning Spartans will be hoping for an upset in their home state. North Carolina came into the final four as favorites given their impressive form line and did not disappoint in its 83-69 victory over Villanova in the semi-finals. Michigan State upset highly-rated Connecticut in the other semi, 82-73. The Tar Heels won the only meeting between the two finalists earlier this season, with a crushing 98-63 at Michigan State's Breslin Center. The game pits Michael Jordan's alma mater (UNC) against Magic Johnson's alma mater (Michigan State), prompting bookmakers to give odds on whether the two will attend the game. Sharon Osbourne, television celebrity and wife of famous rocker Ozzy Osborne, has launched her own online bingo site, Sharonsbingo.com. "I'm so excited to have my very own bingo site," said Osbourne. "The site has been created with my fans in mind, which players will hopefully love." The site, which features a pink background and a portrait of Osbourne with one of her many dogs on the home page, offers themed games such as Footballer's Wags, Pharaoh's Chamber, A Girl's Night Out and one named simply "Sharon Osbourne." "We're delighted that Sharon Osbourne has decided to extend her relationship with us by launching her own bingo Website," said Clive Cottrell of the Gala Coral Group. "Sharon has proved immensely popular with our customers over the past two years so it seems a natural progression for her to have a dedicated Website." Osbourne has been a long time partner of Gala Coral, featuring in TV ads promoting the company's online bingo site and appearing on its television channel. The European Commission, the European Union's executive branch, launched an investigation to determine whether US gambling laws breached World Trade Organization agreements and concluded the laws lack legal justification and are discriminatory. It stated in a preliminary report that the laws on online gambling and arrests of European gaming company directors are both illegal and an obstruction of legitimate commercial activity. The commission said that legal action under WTO rules could be a possibility, but recommended that "the issue should be addressed with the US administration, with a view to finding a negotiated solution." The investigation came in the wake of a complaint filed by the Remote Gambling Association, a roof body representing gambling companies in Europe. Many European gambling operators left the US gaming market following the passing of the 2006 Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA), which effectively banned Internet gambling by outlawing the transfer of funds from a financial institution to Internet gambling sites. US authorities carried out a series of arrest of European gaming executives and the Department of Justice issues subpoenas against investment banks that had advised European gaming companies. The Commission said in its report that European companies were still being chased by the American authorities despite having already quit the market.
Leisure and Gaming (L&G) has just become the leading sponsor of top Italian football team Unione Sportiva Città di Palermo (Palermo) during the 2010/2011 season. Richard Creed, L&G's chief executive stated that he believed his company had "pulled off a significant coup by signing a sponsorship deal with Palermo." Team players will now sport t-shirts bearing the logo of L&G's Italian subsidiary, Betshop Italia. Betshop country manager Riccardo Tamiro claimed, "Betshop and Palermo have a shared passion for football. We also have a common goal: to create value via a partnership based on respect and mutual benefit. We look forward to playing our part in Palermo's success, both on and off the pitch." At present, it is not clear whether the joint venture will also apply during the Italian Cup or other Italian soccer events.
