Advisory Committee for Games Set Up in France

News reports have emerged that France is working to liberalize its gaming sector. It was announced with the appointment of the Comité Consultatif des Jeux (CCJ) that the regulation of the gaming sector would continue. The CCJ is entrusted with the task of advising the French government on the ongoing regulation initiatives with respect to online gambling in France. Infancy Stages The French Minister of Budget said of the Advisory Committee for Games, that it was necessary to await the 2012 elections before reforms were discussed. This is in reference to the potential taxation revenue to be generated from online gaming activity. Throughout France, both online players and gaming operators are calling for increased liberalization of the gaming sector. This would mean that reforms to the taxation laws should be enacted. The May 12th 2010 Act made provisions for such measures, but more far-reaching measures are being called for. Slow to Move on Measures It was expected that within 18 months of coming into effect that the reforms would show dividends. But this does not appear to be a pressing concern of the French government. The Minister of Budget has so far rejected calls for reforms following the 2012 elections. He did however allude to targeting big players in the industry - those with 10% - 15% market share as well as those operators making use of specific gaming software. The task of the Comité Consultatif des Jeux (CCJ) is to centralize tasks, tips and coordination of gaming activity. It is possible that its former chairman, Francois Trucy would become president. French Budget Minister François Baroin already offered him the position to head this important committee.

Catch Up On Sleep Before Gambling, Study Says

A new study conducted by two Duke University medical school neuroscientists has confirmed what many in the online gambling industry already suspected - it is better to play after getting a good night's sleep. Sleep Deprivation The scientists showed, using functional MRI scans, that a night of sleep deprivation leads to increased brain activity in parts of the brain that process positive outcomes, while simultaneously decreasing activity in the parts of the brain that process negative outcomes. Sleep-deprived people in the study were found to make choices that placed an emphasis on winning money, and were found to be less likely to make choices that reduced the risk of losing. "Even if someone makes very sound, risky financial decisions after a normal night of sleep, there is no guarantee that this same person will not expose you to untoward risk if sleep deprived," said the study's co-author Michael Chee, M.D. "I think it's critical that society as a whole grapple with the data generated about the detrimental effects of sleep deprivation and consider whether to continue doing things the old way...Old habits die hard, but maybe some of them should die." Healthy Adults Surveyed Twenty-nine healthy adults with an average age of 22 years took part in the study, which was undertaken to show how sleep deprivation might affect decision making. The subjects had to perform their decision-making tasks twice, once at 8 A.M. after a regular night's sleep and once at 6 A.M. after suffering from sleep deprivation. The message for responsible gambling: It is always better to play after a good night's sleep than after a bad one.

Study: Online Has 26% Share of Sweden Gambling

The online share of Sweden's total gambling market stands at 26 per cent, the highest in Europe, a new study which is about to be released has found. Online Gambling Needs Recognition The study was conducted by the Stockholm-based Research Institute of Industrial Economics, and was to be submitted this week to the Swedish government with the added piece of advice that the government should formally recognize the online gaming sector as contributing to Swedish economic success. Sweden Comes to Grips with Gambling Sweden has always had a troubled relationship with e-gaming, and has been one of the countries most criticized by the European Union for its state gaming monopoly and its failure to come into line with EU laws on loosening cross-border restrictions on online gaming operators. At present all gambling still remains under the full control of the Swedish state and the relevant authorities. These issues will no doubt be raised when the capital Stockholm hosts the Third Annual I-Gaming Forum from April 11-13. The primary purpose of the conference will be to examine taxation and regulatory in the Swedish and Scandinavian online casino markets.
