Phil Mickelson Wins Maiden British Open

Phil Mickelson won his first British Open and his fifth major championship on the back of a stunning final round on Sunday, proving why he was one of the favorites for the title in pre-tournament betting. Mickelson Conquers Britain Mickelson won the claret jug for the first time on the back a 5-under par 66 in Sunday's final round at Muirfield. That performance matched the best round on any of the tournament's four days, and ensured his victory over a large field of other contenders that included Tiger Woods. This was a sweet victory for the Mickelson, who had won four major championships and been runner-up eight time, including once before at the British Open. Incredibly, he finished runner-up at the US Open - the one major he hasn't won - for a sixth time last month. Favorite or Underdog? In golf, more than in any sport, major championships are won almost as often by underdogs as by the favorites. Presumably, this is because the field include so many players, and because tournaments can switch directions with one good - or bad - hole. Mickelson was second favorite behind Tiger Woods for most of the lead-up, getting as close as 14/1 a few days out from the tourney. But he actually fell to 20/1 and the fifth-line in betting (behind Woods, Adam Scott, Justin Rose and Lee Westwood) as the Open began, making him some sort of underdog himself.

US Senate Calls for Online Gambling Regulations

Unregulated gambling could assist terrorists, drug dealers, human traffickers and other organized crime elements to launder money, a bipartisan group of senators agreed at a subcommittee hearing last week. "US Behind Eight-ball" "What we have here is a free-for-all," Senator Kelly Ayotte (R-NH) said at the hearing of the Senate's Commerce, Science and Transportation subcommittee hearing, the first meeting on the topic of online gambling since the states of Nevada, New Jersey and Delaware approved Internet gambling bills. A number of Democrat senators agreed with their Republican counterpart's contention that the federal government's failure to regulate online gambling encourages "money laundering, terrorism and drug trafficking." Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) was one of them, arguing that human traffickers and pornographers take advantage of legal uncertainties to shift money around through online casinos. Among those who argued for federal regulation were Fraternal Order of Police National President Chuck Canterbury and Washington attorney Jack Blum. Canterbury told the committee that "we're always behind the eight-ball on technology", adding: "local law enforcement won't be able to attack money laundering and terrorist activity with 50 separate state laws." Gambling Industry Applauds Senators  The American Gaming Association applauded the Senate for bringing attention to the importance of effective regulation of online gambling. It said in a press release that reports suggest an "alarming number" of Americans spend billions of dollars annually on illegal Internet gambling made possible by foreign companies that fail to verify age and offer basic consumer protections. "Internet poker is a reality that is here to stay," said Geoff Freeman, president and CEO of the American Gaming Association.  "The question is whether Congress will ensure minimum regulatory standards of online poker, protect consumers, exclude bad actors from the American market and provide Native American tribes with an appropriate regulatory framework." Regulation on the Horizon Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) and Sen. Dean Heller (R-Nev.) have said they may introduce new legislation on online gambling this year. Reid and Sen. Jon Kyl (R-Ariz.) drafted a bill last year to amend the Wire Act by regulating poker at a federal level and banning most other forms of online gambling. However, that bill was never introduced, and was criticized heavily by state lottery officials who feared that they wouldn't be able to sell their games over the Internet.

All Bets are off for Betsoft

Software specialist in iGaming, Betsoft, recently lost its case against Bubble Group B.V., which operates under parent company, Sheriff Gaming. The case was heard in the Netherlands Court of Appeal because Betsoft took its case to a higher court after The Court of the First Instance found no fault with Bubble Group. Betsoft Accuses Bubble Group of IP Infringement Betsoft is sore at Bubble Group, saying its IP rights were infringed upon, and that Bubble Group copied Betsoft's gaming style, plus the look and feel of the games through Expandicon. Betsoft claims the zooming effect of Expandicon assisted Bubble Group in acquiring Betsoft information. Throughout the case, Betsoft never backed its facts with proof of infringement on Bubble Group's part. Court of Appeal looks at Source Codes The Court investigated Betsoft's suspicions via analyzing source codes. It could not find the evidence to support Betsoft, and Betsoft failed to provide evidence to back its claim. In addition, the Court addressed a report Betsoft had presented. The Court said the report was manipulated to favour Betsoft, and therefore, the claims were invalidated. In fact, the court ruled Betsoft should have never claimed infringement from the beginning. Sheriff Gaming CEO Responds to the Ruling The CEO of Sheriff Gaming, Stijn Flapper, said it plans to move forward and continue to demonstrate its innovative direction in 3D gaming. The CEO added the gaming company is licensed by Alderney Gambling Control Commission (AGCC), and its regulated markets are in Alderney, the Isle of Man and Malta. Bubble Group is said to be extremely pleased with the decision.
