Innovation Act of 2013 October 23, 2013 saw the introduction to the Innovation Act of 2013, introduced by Chairman of the House Committee on the Judiciary, Bob Goodlatte. The bill is aimed at combatting patent trolls, which are people or companies who buy up patents with no other purpose than later suing real companies for infringement. Patent trolls tend to buy up patents on software, which has affected the online gaming industry. AGA president and CEP Geoff Freeman commended Goodlatte on his work that would prevent "frivolous patent litigation." It is estimated that patent trolls cost the United States $29 billion in 2011, a 400% increase from 2005. The Innovation Act will hopefully reduce that number substantially.
